Has anybody noticed HD-DVD's recent upsurge in market share?  They have almost topped blu-ray,  check it:

Why is this?  I am guessing b/c of the price drop in the HD-DVD's player, but if anybody else anything more substantial, let me know.  Thanks.

Also, this *might* spur Sony to drop prices for the PS3, as it is still the cheapest blu-ray player out there.  In fact, if I were Sony, I would chop off $100 from the asking price of the PS3, immediately.  Thoughts?

Sony is already losing a lot of money and a price cut would hurt, but I think they have to just do it. And I would cut it $200 and just take the loss and move the hardware. Then work like crazy to get the manufacturing costs down to slow the bleeding.

Well, this is basically the biggest single event to a precursor that we could have..I don't know if you guys have been following the prices of high-def DVD players, but the HD-DVD toshiba model has dropped from $1000, to $399.  The cheapest blu-ray player out there is $799, currently.

If sony does not drop prices soon, they will sponsor a price drop for samsung's blu-ray player, b/c this high-def dvd business is going to be easy money once a winner finally appears.

It all depends on when the Studio's release there movies.

Last month it was Blu Ray with Casino Royale and now it's Children of Men or The Departed for HD DVD.

um, according to that link, the only major surge for HD-DVD was for the Planet Earth series. Or maybe I missed something....

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

I don't know. But I find it interesting that the HD-DVD version of Planet Earth is selling better than the Blu-ray version. Maybe people used up all their coupons they got with their PS3s.

There is a blu-ray version of Planet Earth too, but it isn't selling as well strangely.

No, its the price drop.  The average HD-DVD movie's place in amazon.com's DVD sales was about 600 a few weeks ago, and now it has jumped up to 340.  Blu-ray has been consistent at 250 but the gap has decreased sharply in just 5-6 days.

The PS3 came out of the gate pretty strong, and it is likely that a large portion of the population who bought a PS3 decided to buy a few Blu-Ray movies to try out. Now, most of the people who bought a PS3 are primarily gamers and are unlikley to continue to buy a large quantity of movies for any period of time. Now, if the PS3 was selling better new owners would be buying a ton of movies to take advantage of their "Brand New Blu-Ray player" and the drop in sales of Blu-Ray movies wouldn't be that noticeable.

Meanwhile HD-DVD is selling heavily to movie collectors and is seeing a constant steady growth.
