Forums - Sales - Sony making more money from software than MS.

Guys, there's no need for fighting.  It's just a little miscommunication, and tossing around insults won't do anything to settle this discussion.

Well I know it doesn't cost a billion dollars annually to deliver online play. I mean Sony doesn't lose a billion dollars offering it for free.

the servers cost alot and the exclusivity that they try to purchase costs alot

Also, they make enough to have Activision and EA complaining.

the Activision and EA complaining isn't about what MS makes

its that more people have to pay for XBOX LIVE to play online and also when people play the games online, they forget about other games

It also motivated Sony to offer PSN Plus.

how the hell is PSN plus motivated by it as it is a totally different service

According to the link below, Blizzard only spent $200 million on operational costs for WoW, between the years of 2004 and 2008. Not bad considering they generate hundreds of millions annually.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2330507,00.asp

With that said, it must only take a small fraction of Gold subscriptions to cover the cost of the servers. MS purchases exclusives with the shit ton of profit they earn from Gold subscribers.

Bullshit, the Activision CEO has complained that MW2 is the most played game on Live yet MS is the one earning from Gold subscriptions. EA has been struggling with MS since the original Xbox basically the same reason.

Simply offering a pay service was clearly motivated by Xbox Live. They even offer some of the same benefits as Gold accounts. I think by the time the PS4 rolls around, PSN Plus will be required for online play.

They'd get one hell of a backlash if they start charging for online play, regardless if it was on a new platform.

It's something Ireally  doubt they'd do, given the way PSN is set up.  It currentlly spans both PS3 and PSP quite well, and with the way things are hading, it should have similar functionality on both PS4 and PSP2 as it has on PS3.  It's become a platform in and of itself, one that spans multiple pieces of hardware, much like Steam.  Charging for online play on one piece of hardware but not another simply would not work.

Really all they need is for PS Plus, Home, etc. to cover the costs of PSN.  Online pay doesn't come with any costs outside of the inherent costs of hosting and storing someone's profile, which comes with every pSN user, whether they play online or not.  So long as these servies vocer PSN's expenses, they shouldn't have a need to start charging for online play.

Also, PS Plus and XBL are too fundementally different products.  With XBL you're paying for features such as online play and party chat, with a few services like Netflix mixed in.  With PS Plus, you're currently paying primarily for discounts and whanot, as well as access to some services and products like Hulu Plus and Qore.  It's more like a mix of a rewards card and a magazine subscription rather than a user fee.

It is really only beneficial for people who use PSN quite actively (and indeed, the only people on my friends list that have paid for the service are the most active users I know), and there is no detriment to NOT having the service, aside from missing the ocassional discount on a game you may be interested in.  On the other hand, if you don't have XBL Gold you lose access to half the features in most games (more than half in any modern FPS).

There wouldn't be a backlash if they do it for the PS4. MS makes a ton of money from it and Sony fans would pay as well.

Where else could Sony fans go? Going to Xbox is pointless because they charge as well and they can't play 1st party Sony games. Nintendo hasn't shown much interest in online gaming in general. Sony fans would pay and argue why PSN Plus is a better service than XBL.

I understand the services differ. I'm simply saying MS motivated Sony to create a subscription based service. And some of the benefits are similar to what you get from XBL. It also can help smooth the transition from free to paid online services.

I really don't know about using 'data' like this to come to sweeping conclusions.  Only seems to start arguments that don't go anywhere.

OT: So how DO you put someone on Ignore?  I skimmed the 'How do I' thread and it said you can't on gamrConnect.

You can. You just need the updated script and Greasemonkey. You can also turns all those ugly green buttons into pretty Nintendo blue for me too!

If your going to  count PS2 and PSP software along with PS3 and PSN software than you should count all of Microsoft's sales. PC software, Windows XP, Vista, 7 , Moble 7 apps, XBLA, and Xbox 360 all together.

We are talking about software sales and Microsoft makes and sells a lot more software than just Xbox 360. If you're not going to count it all then you should just compare PS3 and Xbox 360 retail games and PSN/XBLA.

#1 M$ barely has a first party

#2 Is it really fair to compare only the 360 to the PS3, PS2, and PSP?

I believe there's more to it than that.  A majority of multiplats have been selling better on the ps3 since the beginning of the year, both new releases and older games.  If you look through our weekly software charts, even older titles like GTAIV are selling better ps3, and the ps3's lead in software when tallying up the sales of these multiplats is generally much larger than the gap in weekly hardware sales.

This trend has continued even these past few weeks.  The 360 has been selling significantly more hardware since the release of the 360S in North America, yet the ps3 is still selling more software (save for last week, but if you remove the two big new exclusives - Crackdown 2 and White Knight Chronicles 2 - ps3 wins).

I think the buying base of ps3 owners is simply larger than that of 360 owners now, though some demographics will continue to lean one way or the other.  Whether it's due to piracy, people rebuying the console (as shown buy the bump in hardware sales not accompanied by a bump in software sales these past few weeks), or what have you, ps3 owners are generally buying more software

What you say is true but I think a lot of what we're seeing in terms of software sales for the PS3 is a reflection of the huge increase in HW sales it has seen over the past 9 months. What we are now seeing is the bump in SW sales (pushing them over the 360 for most of the year) created by those who bought new HW since the PS3 slim launch. I would always expect SW to lag HW sales by some months as new console owners don't tend to be able to spend too much money on games after buying a $299 console.

I don't expect to see the SW sales increase to match the increase in 360 HW sales for several months when I expect they will probably start to overtake the PS3 on a weekly basis again. Also, for that reason I don't think that SW sales are as of yet a reliable indicator of how many 360 S are due to re-buys or new owners.

Sony's SW -  72 Million (14.5 million first party) Includes PS3 (50.8), PS2 (6.8) and PSP (15.2) Sales

MS's SW - 46.6 Million (4.3 million first party) 360 sales only.

Using the estimates of $48 for a first party games and $12 for third party games. We see that Sony earns a total of about 1.38 billion dollars compared to 707 million dollars for MS.

Interesting seeing PS3 SW sales being higher than 360 SW even with a 5 million lead, also interesting to see Sony making so much money form it but still posting loss after loss.

Interesting you had to add PS2 And PSP sales. I wonder what will happen if i add all microsoft software and digital downloads.
