This trend has continued even these past few weeks. The 360 has been selling significantly more hardware since the release of the 360S in North America, yet the ps3 is still selling more software (save for last week, but if you remove the two big new exclusives - Crackdown 2 and White Knight Chronicles 2 - ps3 wins). I think the buying base of ps3 owners is simply larger than that of 360 owners now, though some demographics will continue to lean one way or the other. Whether it's due to piracy, people rebuying the console (as shown buy the bump in hardware sales not accompanied by a bump in software sales these past few weeks), or what have you, ps3 owners are generally buying more software |
What you say is true but I think a lot of what we're seeing in terms of software sales for the PS3 is a reflection of the huge increase in HW sales it has seen over the past 9 months. What we are now seeing is the bump in SW sales (pushing them over the 360 for most of the year) created by those who bought new HW since the PS3 slim launch. I would always expect SW to lag HW sales by some months as new console owners don't tend to be able to spend too much money on games after buying a $299 console.
I don't expect to see the SW sales increase to match the increase in 360 HW sales for several months when I expect they will probably start to overtake the PS3 on a weekly basis again. Also, for that reason I don't think that SW sales are as of yet a reliable indicator of how many 360 S are due to re-buys or new owners.
