the PS3 is having a great year, but it's not going to be better than 360/Wii. I've got the feeling that the 360 will be the only console up YoY in sales this year unless GT5 suddenly takes off with the masses of the PS3 gets another price drop (it probably won't).

I wouldn't totally rule out PS3 being up YOY. After seeing this month's NPD it was painfully clear that shortages were holding it back. If supply is good for September for the Move launch and possibly clearance on the 120 and 250 gig models to make way for the 160 and 320 gig models and the rumored Madden 11 bundle than they can stem a LOT of the YOY bleed. GT5 will go a very long way to make PS3 match last Christmas. Not to mention there's always the possibility that we could see adjustments to the first half of the year once financials come in. I have a sneaky suspiscion we're undertracking the PS3 in Canada and Asia.

In fact in last 44 NPD's 360 has won 36.

IMHO

Wii - Will be slightly down 2nd half of year compared to last year, as there won't be a price cut and a game on the same scale as NSMB.

PS3 - Down, because I don't think there will be another price cut, especially not as they only cut the price $100 last year. GT will push consoles, but not enough to make it flat, and I generally think 360 will steal massive thunder from PS3 this xmas in America. I don't think Move will sell to new cauals.

360 - Up, how can it not be? It's last 2nd was bare bones, no price cut (elite turning into pro isn't what I call a price cut), no huge games, I guess MW2 should get a mention here though. I think we'll see a price cut in line with current phats atm, and a good response to Kinect, better than move in regards to console HW sales anyway.

These are just my opinions, trying to be as honest and logical as I can, obviously it's going to come across as bias ..., that's inevitable.

I will say though I expect GT5 to do wonders for HW across europe this xmas.

the question is how up will it beat PS3s almost 13M sold in a year from Jan- Dec 09? or just match or slightly beat its 08 record of just 11M?

PS3 down? i think its a given it will be way up form july-august

then down for sept and probably flat or slightly down rest of that

either way it still gots a 1.5M up yoy to bank on if it happens to slip up some where

It's up YOY over 2008 numbers already, by 700k. If the rest of the year goes better than 2008's xmas, and Kinect does well, it's only an extra 1.3 mill to reach 13 mill.

Ya I know it'll be up July/August, I meant September onwards really.

Here's a tip.  Never use improvement as a meaningful stat.  Variables that are lower  (ahem...PS3) have much more room at the top of the scale and therefore are more likely to improve.  What does this stat tell us at the end of the day..... almost nothing.



Remember, magic is just stuff science has not made boring yet.

Yup, good post, the other consoles wernt low enough to have as meaningful a growth as PS3, which was very low in 2007.

If MS and Nintendo were willing to sell their consoles at a loss (or a tiny profit) they would have higher sales as well. Its amazing that people respect PS3 sales considering how much money Sony had to lose for it to sell.
