In the UK the impression I get is that the 360 is seen as the best buy for money if you're not also into BR movies  as well as HD/Online gaming while PS3 is seen as the best buy for money if you are also into BR movies as well as HD/Online gaming.

The split in demand I believe nicely correlates with the fact that although HD TV sales have been okay in UK SD and DVD are still the dominant formats.

The Wii though does seem to have seen a drop in market awareness and 'must have' factor.  It's still selling well, but in general terms the marketing presence and sense of demand seems to be much stronger recently for 360/PS3 vs the Wii.

The 360 does have the advantage of being cheaper (albeit more on paper than reality prior to the 360s) and has, much like US, taken root as the console of choice for teenagers and young males, which has helped secure it's position in the UK as arguably the more dominant console of late (although LTD is still trails the Wii and will probably continue to do so).

I think the UK shows a very good split across the three consoles, in line with demographics and purchasing demand, with only the poor PSP looking (again, similar to US) like the black sheep of the family.

Noone really cares for Blu Ray here. I know more people who download HD films via either Xbox Live, BT Vision than even own a Blu Ray player.

In fact Ive only ever once since Blu Ray has been out here ( 4 years ) seen an actual Blu Ray disc.

And I can go into HMV, supermarkets etc without even seeing a BluRay on store shelves. Just DVD's.

BluRay prices are still the same as 4 years ago. £20-£30. To own an HD film via download is about £7. To rent HD films via download is around £2-£3. Blockbuster charge as much as £6 to rent a BluRay for 24 hours.

UK is gonna miss BluRay alltogether.

I for one am getting the 360s next week to fully utilise HD film downloads in my home. I never have to :

1. spend extra for another new media.

2. Either find more shelf space.

3. Sell my BluRays when the next comes out.

I personally think certainly in the UK where Broadband is so easily available now, that BluRay will probably be the last medium here. It is struggling big here. More people definately have adopted downloads here. It's evident by the lack of BluRay shelf space.

@bolded - seriously? where are you buying your Blu-rays from? they're usually between £10 and £20, some are blow 10 quid. I never pay more than £15 for one.

i think he was talking about the full price.....................lol

In the UK we buy with our heads....

The console that gives the biggest punch for the pound is the 360 - so we buy it, its that simple.

No emotional loyalty to bygone days... no sheep like following of trends beyond their natural lives... no xenophobic bias (not that we even make a console! lol)

The UK (with the US) has also been a trend setter for popular culture, you will all follow soon

But you suck at sports.

U21: Neuer, Özil, Khedira, Aogo --> those 4 played for Germany this world cup.

Sorry for offtopic.

I am glad that 360 is doing so well in uk. A lot of developers are in the uk, so being big there can't be a bad thing

Not at the sports that matter!

Reason BLu-ray isn't taking off ifs the pricing I would guess.  I still buy my movies on DVD because they are a quarter of the price.  The only times I buy Bluray are when they do those 2-in-1 packages that contain both a Bluray and and DVD for something like £10, I rarely pay more then £4 for a new DVD, in some DVD box sets you can get films for about £1.50-£3 each...new, but blu-ray box sets tend to work out ££7-10 each movie still.

and will be cheaper next gen

As for Blu-Ray - no doubt things are getting better, but DVD is still outselling it in the UK. I guess Blu-Ray is in its early stages though, and if/when 3D goes big Blu-Ray will pick up a lot.

Digital Download is not viable for a lot of the UK at the minute  - and people just like physical media more.

People keep saying this....  How many 3d movies are worth watching, let alone buying to keep forever?    Name me your top 10, hell try a top 5.

we are talking about the future where more and more movie are going 3D.WE AREN'T TALKING ABOUT NOW

I am going to see a movie tonight.... inception.  It isnt 3d.. but I expect it to be the best movie I have seen in the last 12 months.

And....?

2d to 3d isnt like b&w to colour... its mainly a money making exercise for the studios.    It adds nothing to the vast majority of movies, except maybe massive actions movies and animated movies.

3d would get in the way of an awful lot of movies.  Warner are pushing 3d more than anyone and if they do then they will lose some very talented directors like chrostopher nolan for example... he doesnt like the idea of 3d film making at all...

I disagree here, a lot.

3D is more than just pop out actions. It adds so much depth, and is amazing when used right.

Football is the greatest ever in 3D.

Christopher nolan isn't the only director out there

why the hell are you syuck with your own thoughts?

just because you don't like it or one director doesn't do it doesn't mean it won't happen

so?

so you don't understand what FUTURE means???????????

Inception is now not future

This has nothing to do with the future...    its about the quality of a movie.  Story telling and direction is far more important than the 3d effect... FAR more important.

yes but effects give it the extra life, its an option which people are liking

would godfather 2 be better in 3d?  no

you don't know, whether it would be or not as we haven't experienced it.how would it be like to be in the same room as the mafia, that would be good.

yes the main feature is the story but isn't that in everything.3D can be more of an effects for people who like it and they are liking it

is avatar be worse in 2d?... hell yes.

again ur choice, people like it in 3Das they feel they are themselves there

Why?  Because one is a good story well told and well directed the other is a cliched movie film about blue aliens.

depends on ur choice

It took a long time to go from black and white to colour, and the change will probably be quite similar.

- Not all studios adopted colour straight away,

- Colour came to cinemas first - small numbers of movies to start with, the more as technology became cheaper and more available.

- It didn't take on in the home for a while - people couldn't afford colour TVs to start with, then it went mainstream, more TV programs were made in colour (remember those Captain Scarlet and Tunrderbirds programs?) and TVs came more available and cheaper.

There will be similarities in the adoption of 3D, there's no reason at this time to suggest 3D won't catch on mainstream at this time.

You never see the irony of your own posts do you. There is no more inflexible and bloody minded poster here than you, and yet you accuse others of this all the time.

I'm not saying it wont happen, I'm saying movies will be the worse for it, studios however will be richer - which is what this is really about.  Ticket prices for 3d movies are higher and in the States there is a bit of a row about this.

the 3D prices are more as not all people watch 3D.what stops them from being the same when all people start watching them

and if you want to watch the movie 3D or 2D is ur choice so how will they be worse when u urself are selecting it
