if you had the ylod and didnt reball it youll get it again i doesnt matter if you re applied the TP also i think the new models 40gb and up used a silver based TP unlike the 20 60 and 80gb old fats

I don't think he meant that he had YLOD and after that he didn't experience it anymore. Isn't YLOD permanent, without that reballing stuff? I presume he is talking about he's second PS3 now?...erm...presumptions, presumptions...

Sorry I should have been more clear. My first ps3 died and the one I have now is a Sony refurb. I'd like to keep this one working.

I'll play with my 60GB version until it explodes so I can sue Sony. Hopefully it won't get the YLOD before that.

yep well redoing the TP with a better grade will help another thing you can do is jack up the PS3 system it self that will also make it run cooler like they talk about in this thread http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-General-Discussion/Simple-mod-to-make-60gig-PS3-run-a-little-cooler/td-p/7156146;jsessionid=03776EB86C29E7BDD5F89D5728D39D60

i personally have mine jacked up about a inch and 1/4 on 4 small wooden blocks that i painted black so its barley noticeable and system runs and feels noticeably cooler than before

There are other methods to saving your PS3 after the YLOD.  I used one on mine.  I also replaced the thermal paste.  As what the OP said is true.  The paste on the CPU was all dried up and the paste on the GPU was getting there.

I've said it before, I've got my fan running at top speed all the time now.  The system is loud but it doesn't get hot at all.  Some people said it would only last me a few weeks, well it's been 2 months and counting.

And in case you're wondering how I fixed the YLOD, I baked the motherboard...craziest idea ever, but it worked.

I thought exactly the same and out of a sudden got YLOD! Got it repaired locally tho and my 60GB is working like new now. Going to upgrade at some point but the Slim doesnt look as nice as the original PS3s

Well my 60GB EU launch PS3 (which may be slightly different) is now being used as a blu-ray player, so that should survive... it was heavily used for about 3 1/4 years, but it should survive if it is now being barely used

Oh so thats what that huge hole in my living room is from

A couple important points here

If you're worried about voiding your warranty, don't be. If you have a 60gb ps3 it most likely isn't warrantied. In North America, *new* ps3s come with a one year warranty, and sony refurbs come with a 90 day warranty. Chances are you have no warranty left.

Also, I'd recommend against using a conductive thermal paste like arctic silver 5. It's a highly regarded paste, sure, but I would personally use OCZ freeze or something similar that is non-conductive.

If you feel this seems daunting, don't worry. Taken as a whole it's quite a bit of work to take apart a ps3. However, when broken down into steps it's very doable. I have never taken apart a ps3 before and I did it in under 2 hours from start to finish. Just make sure you have a set of electronic screwdrivers and a fresh tube of paste on hand before starting. This is very doable by anyone who isn't a moron and can follow simple instructions.

If you choose not to do this and have your ps3 die from ylod, don't say I didn't warn you.

Good luck

Thanks for your tips partner.

I opened and cleaned up my PS3 a few months ago. My point was: "OK, your PS3 is no warranty covered anymore. Now, it's your responsibility to maintain it". However, I didn't do the thermal paste thing, though I know it's quite important. I'll do it when I come back from summer holidays ^^.

You should do so and be proud of your videogame console. I mean, BC is priceless guys :_)
