There are other methods to saving your PS3 after the YLOD. I used one on mine. I also replaced the thermal paste. As what the OP said is true. The paste on the CPU was all dried up and the paste on the GPU was getting there.
I've said it before, I've got my fan running at top speed all the time now. The system is loud but it doesn't get hot at all. Some people said it would only last me a few weeks, well it's been 2 months and counting.
And in case you're wondering how I fixed the YLOD, I baked the motherboard...craziest idea ever, but it worked.
