i like turn-based battles but i have to admit, i prefer action rpgs. just seem more fun to me.

But god of war is more hack and slash than anything.

A portion of an IGN interview with Yuji Horii... IGN: Is there anything you notice in the difference between how American and Japanese reviewers tend to look at turn-based RPG's? Yuji Horii: I wonder sometimes why the US reviewers are more negative towards turn-based battle systems. Real-time play has fun aspects too, but for this type of game there is more strategy that comes with a turn-based system. Also, you can play with other people in this game and decide what actions to take together. Full interview here |
although im not big on turn based rpgs (some are fun ive enjoyed chrono trigger, inindo, lost odyssey and though its only semi turn based kotor) i also disagree with that last sentence i dont believe either requires more skill than the other. they are just played differently and require different skills as well as preferences.
This is a misleading thread title.
S-E is saying that Western reviewers tend to slam games for being turn-based, which is true.

I don't usually lol at much of anything from this site, but I got a good hearty laugh from this, so thank you =)
I have to say though, there's a problem with many turn-based games when most of the strategy is merely "use fire on ice-based enemies". That's not strategy compared to the strategy used in real strategy games like Fire Emblem or Civilization. There's nothing wrong with turn-based, but most turn-based games I've played (FF, Lunar, etc.) are pretty much the easiest games I've ever played. There is very little strategy/knowledge/intelligence needed to play them.
Still, some of them (like FF6) are among my favorite games ever. If they want to appeal to a more western audience, the turn-based system used in some of their RPGs needs a level up =) and they need to have more instances of compelling stories and characters without over-dramatization. Well, that's to appeal to me at least =)
I love my Turn-Based RPGs! Wizardry showed up the way!
The Console Vs. PC argument cannot hold here (the Westerns like PC type games more) when games like Wizardry, Dragon Wars, Ultima were turn-based in the early 1980s (pre NES and the supposed console boom with DQ/FF turn-based games)
If you want to use the PC argument, it would have to be that PC RPGs let you choose your character/race/alignment/etc. While there are exceptions to every rule (WKC for one), this would make more sense than PC gamers (Western Gamers) do not play Turn-Based, cause yes we did.
Well one thing I've noticed about turn based games is... they tend to go on for around 60 hours, there is more reading than actual gameplay, and they've seen little innovation in the past two decades.
Why don't Japanese gamers go ape shit for shooters? I don't know and I don't care.

Ok first off, misleading title. Why couldn't you include "reviewers" in the title? I came here to bitch on the basis that a lot of gamers in the U.S enjoy turn-based RPGs. But now all my anger is focused torwards Soriko >:[
