Forums - Gaming - For those who complain about the high cost of gaming..........

And Europeans have it much better than say, South Americans.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

SO TRUE man, I'm an Ecuadorian and the average Xbox 360/PS3 game costs $95-$100. PSP games are really expensive too, costing up to $60. Wii games cost $90. The only moderately priced games are the DS ones, costing at most $45 (yes, that is unexpensive when taken in perspective).

And don't get me started on the price of consoles and the availability of certain games...

Americans like to hear themselves complain, thats for sure.

everywhere else games ARE expensive.

QFT. I pay 50 Euros for my DS games, more than double you Americans do, stop complaining.

Geez kinda  hateful...

I'm guessing euo folk only have the right to complain.

Sigh.

I don't like to generalize, but you Americans bitch about games prices more than anyone, and you get the cheapest prices along with Japan. Not to mention getting games months before we do, although that has improved recently.

England is very cheap. Average game starts off around £35 - £40

After a month or so if you look around (online) you can find it for £30

Then after 3 or 4 months you can probably get it for £20-25

Thats probably going at an average. I managed to pick LBP up for £10 4 months after release for example.

.......a little perspective is in order.

When I was a kid growing up in the 80's, a gallon of gas cost seventy five cents.  A pay phone call cost a quarter.  A candy bar cost anywhere between 25 cents and 50 cents.  The first game I ever bought (and incidentally, the first shitty game I ever played) was Wrestlemania for the Nes.  It cost $50.

Fast forward to the year 2010.  A gallon of gas costs upwards of $3.  A payphone call costs......well, when was the last time you saw a payphone?  A candy bar costs about $1.  The last game I bought cost $50.  Times have changed, but despite the fact that gaming consoles do much more than just play games, games have gotten complex to the point that they are often more visually impressive than movies a few years ago, the prices are still about the same.. If you ask me, we gamers have got it pretty damned good!

Next time you pay a few dollars for your next PSN, Live Arcade, or Virtual Console game, that takes about 2 hours to beat and has primitive gameplay/graphics, remember:  these games used to cost $50!  Appreciate how good we've got it.  I know I do!

I think that it go's to prove they are overpriced. Cause if they would not be over priced, they would cost more today.

But companies are actually losing money on games.  Do you think they should cut prices in order to sell more or raise prices in order to make more profit?  Or should it just be survival of the fittest and the companies that lose money despite the $50-$60 retail price of games should just go out of business?

No.

But id add bad games into the equation.

Pore quality and unfinished, unpolished games hurt the industry

and its profits.

un-tested un-polished games may be holding the potential asking price of games down?

With 20 years of inflation, games should be arround 85$ in my part of the world. I think they where to expencive from the start, and the market is adjusting to that fact.

Now i find it hard to belive publisher are losing money on software in the first place.

Game prices are about the same here if you buy them new on e-bay-like sites. On actual retailers a Wii game will go for around 130 dollars.

A Wii itself is around 550-600 in stores and about 475 on those sites.

If you take into account differences in income and free money it's ridiculous. I don't think many people would pay 400 USD for a game in the USA.

So yeah, americans complaining about the cost of games is kinda funny.

I don't know. I live in the south, so it's cold on winter. But it doesn't snow and there are no montains. It's just useless cold.

I've never complained about the "high cost" of gaming. Except for when I was 14 and a Game Boy Advance was 100 dollars. Damn did it take forever to save for one.

while I agree that prices are not technically high... the quality of games has been greatly reduced. (yeah I consider NES gems like SMB3 to be of higher quality than MW2).

The only reason prices should drop is because we are flooded with crap... and competition (even if crap) means lower prices.
