Forums - Gaming - For those who complain about the high cost of gaming..........

I totally agree.  I stated the same thing in a forum a few months back.

A few to remeber:

Maniac Mansion - Nes: £59.99

Street Fighter 2 - SNES: £64.99

Virtua Racing - Megadrive: £69.99/£64.99

I remeber Starfox being pretty expensive and most Super FX games
There was also a couple of higher priced master System games.

The cost of CD production compared to Cartidge is a big factor.
As is the mass production of some of the components used in Disc based systems like the drives, wireless and USB connectivity.

Also Moores Law with regards to components.

Oh and i saw petrol for 114.9 the other day and that is cheap here in the UK.  That's nearly $2.00 per LITRE(slightly less than a Quart) never mind a gallon.  But i guess expensive is relative to what your used to paying.

Systems owned
Vectrex, Master System, Nes, Megadrive 1 + 2, Mega CD, Super Nintendo, Jaguar, Saturn, Playstation, N64, Dreamcast, Gamecube, PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, WII
Handhelds: Game gear, game boy, Lynx 1, Lynx 2, Gameboy Advance, Neo Geo Pocket Colour, PS Vita, Ds Lite, 3DS,
All the ones in read were/are my favourite.

They simply have a lot of it. But they don't use nearly as much, so they sell a lot of it for other countries like the USA and still keep enough for themselves. They make a lot of money selling it outside so they don't tax their own economy with the burden of expensive gas.

what's the average salary in venezuela? or the average cost of a small home?

i'm just wondering, so that i can put the cost of gas into better perspective

I don't know, it sure is a lot less than in USA, but gas should still be cheaper when compared to those than it is on the USA.

EDIT: I was bored. Their GPD per capita is over 4 times lower than the american one, and distribution should be poorer too. Still, it's cheap.

You got ripped off on your N64.  They were $199 in my area at launch.  :P

Also, what's worse than $50 NES games were the $70 N64 games!  Those cartridges made things SO expensive.

Games this gen are actually quite cheap in comparison.

Yeah, and as has been mentioned already, N64 games were ridiculous. But there were a few that got pricey here, too: FF3 (or FF6) and Chrono Trigger for the SNES retailed for $80, and Phantasy Star 4 for the Genesis ran $90! Japan wasn't any better, either, as I remember hearing about some SFC games running about ¥10,000. So yeah, prices have actually come down from the savings in disk replication, let alone inflation. (Though I may be wrong, I thought I remembered a bunch of PS1 games coming out at $40?)

Oh, and a minor correction- a liter is slightly more than a quart. (33.8 oz to 32 oz.) Usually when people ask me about liters to gallons, I tell them 4 liters = 1 gallon and a small paper cup (7.2 oz). And it makes the price of gas over there seem just that much more scary...

You've got it cheap.

In June 2008, I bought a PS3 for $840. MGS4 for $130, GTA IV for $120. The normal price for a PS360 game here is $110.

I bought all my other games from Play-Asia...and you've still got it cheaper.

Yeah, games don't seem to be really affected by inflation.

Weren't most NES games $30 to $40 tho?

Trust me.  I had to save for weeks to buy my first Nes game.  It was $49.  When I finally started seeing games for $19 (much older games), I couldn't believe it!  But yeah.  Nes games were $50.  Gameboy games were $30.  I even have some really old magazines that I could dig out of my closet from the late 80's and early 90's, if I have to.

*edit* Since I'm getting old, I figured I needed to google old Nes sale pages to make sure memory served me correctly.  Here's a page from a 1990 Sears catalog: http://www.huguesjohnson.com/features/sears_catalog/sears-catalog-1990-pg1446-NES_full.jpg

Thanks. Interesting to see an actually catalog. But yeah when you adjust for inflation gaming is a much cheaper hobby today then it was 25 years ago.

In the USA petrol is $3?

Here in the U.K, petrol is £1.30 ($1.95) a litre, with roughly 4 litres in a gallon thats almost $8 a gallon.  Well, I think the taxes and stuff are justified due to all the negative externalities and that jazz.

Anyway on topic, gaming is cheaper now than previous generation due to disc based formats being used instead of cartridges.
