Are we including agnostic people in with "athiests?"

Just wondering.. and I'm also wondering if those people are truly athiest, or merely say it because it's the more common term. I'm more agnostic than anything... it'll be a long time before we humans ever attain some enlightenment that proves the existance of a god or afterlife, so in the meantime I'll find truth in unknowingness.

I wouldn't put agnostics and atheists in the same bag. In the core, they're completely different from each other.

I, for one, am an atheist. I don't believe there's a god or such kind of beings, but it's possible there was a Jesus (although without the hocus pocus written in the bible).

Truth be told, I think agnosticism is more balanced they atheism or any religion. You may not have any evidence of god, but that doesn't prove he's not real.

How are they so completely different? All the negative reaction I've ever heard about agnosticism is that it's so incredibly close to atheism that it's hardly woth calling it its own class. It's all about how close to zero you want to go with the probability of no type of Diety existing... but I'm betting there's a lot of self-proclaimed "athiests" who actually are more agnostic.

...Even though they're almost the same thing.

Agnosticism and atheism are completely different...

An atheist would say there is no god.
An christian would say there is a god.
An agnostic would say it is unknown the existence of a god.

Agnosticism is as close to atheism as it is to christianism(or any other god-worshipping religion). There is no judgement on the existence of god, unlike in atheism and religions.

Good. That is all I have to say.

Interesting. I remember watching a programme on TV about how there were more atheists than Jewish people in the US yet Jewish people had far more representation and allowances than atheists. It's actually kinda sad that they've had to form these groups as stated in the article to give themselves a voice.

Atheists don't really have anything they need allowances for that I can think of.  I mean there's no days of observence for atheism.

It's like complaining that people without diabities have less allowances then people with diabities.

As for representation... Jewish people tend to live more in the same districts, areas and states.

Atheists are fairly evenly spread.  Also, since atheism is the lack of a religious belief... I can't see that being a big motivator for elections like being part of a minority religious group that's been persecuted since it's existed.

Im an Athiest. Religious people never push their shit on me, though I try to avoid the religious conversation. Part of me wants to ask what is wrong with religious people(I find their beliefs mind boggling) but I know it is a waste of time. If anything I am suprised the % of people that are Athiests is so low.

quick edit: I do celebrate December 25th as gift day, a day to give to friends and family. I can live without the other holy days but partake in them if I am home during them(though I am only home for a few days around the 25th) cause I dont want to offend my parents.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

Just to clarify a few things in this topic;

Agnosticism - The belief that it is impossible to know whether there is a god or not

Weak atheism - The lack of a belief in God

Strong atheism - The belief that there is no God

A person can be both atheist and agnostic, or both christian and agnostic. Atheism also doesn't technically require active belief (there is no God) it simply requires somebody to not believe in a God, which is passive.

Atheism is also in many ways seperate from religion (and certainly is not a religion in itself), a person can be atheist and religious at the same time - as most Buddhists and I think some Hindus are. Religion is a belief system with dogma and rituals, atheism simply doesn't have those.

Now, on topic: It's a sign of America becoming somewhat more secular and progressive in my opinion.

I'm Agnostic myself. But this is good to see. I'm glad to see people thinking for themselves. Not to say that if you are religious you aren't thinking for yourself.

Actually, I'm of my own secular beliefs lol. I largely don't care if there is a God or not, an after life or not. I'm just gonna ride this wagon til the wheels fall off. I try to not do any person harm, verbally or physically and try to be the best possible person I can be. Not because of some book, or because of fear of some punishment later on. But because that's what I feel is right..whatever that means ha.

This is pretty close to my thoughts, except that, to me, belief in a god makes no sense. How could a being exist to bring other beings into existance, especially when we have proof of things like evolution? There are theories about the beginning of life that make more sense to me than this all-knowing being just snapping and things being so. I'm not to the point of scientology, but I do believe that science is closer to the truth about the origins of the universe.

I won't tell a believer that they're wrong, because I can't concretely prove it wrong, but I also expect to not have it shoved down my throat that there is, because they can't prove me wrong. Basically, I've got my beliefs, and you yours- don't try to force your thoughts at me, and we'll be fine. (Oh, and don't expect me to partake in a religious aspect of any holiday.)

I actually feel this way as well some times. But I think it does make sense in the context of the unknown. Some folks need the comfort of their beliefs to get through life, life in itself is a struggle, you know? I can understand that, but I don't need that.

What I find as a recuring theme here in this thread is people don't want religion or anti religious? beliefs forced upon them. I think that most people want to believe or not believe whatever it is they believe lol.

I'm glad that Athiesm is on the rise. I wonder if its just in America or WW though. I've heard that WW Atheism is even more pronounced.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Meh, atheists still are (and always will be) a very small minority in the world. Theres always gonna be a lot more relgious people than atheist people, and that puts smile on my face :)

I'm a Christian but i treat everyone the same whether they believe in jesus or not. They have their beliefs and i have mine. Religion won't put a barrier between me and a person.
