I think if anyone can beat the DS, it will be the DS,but, I'm not sure if it will.
The DS didn’t really sell that well until the DS Lite was released, and if the 3DS starts out as strong as the DSLite and sells as long as the DS did it should be easy for it to pass the sales of the Nintendo DS.

Research the games next time. You didn't. Look up their 1st party lineup and 3rd party lineup. If you're complaining there's not enough new IPs, that's pretty stupid. |
The number of new IP's is insignificant. What matters is how much hardware selling power each one has.
Will all the DS owners feel the need to upgrade? What about the people that mainly played games like Brain Training (where 3D or better graphics will do nothing for them)? What about people that aren't willing to pay $200 for the same DS experiences in 3D?
Nintendo hasn't yet shown a new Brain Age, Nintendogs, Wii Fit type of software that could drive interest for new customers, which is something that may be a requirement to pass the DS at this point (160mil ). That's fine for now, since the console will be sold out for a while thanks to the 3D on older games alone, but that alone won't give it the insane consecutive 30mil years the DS had.
It's too early to tell, between competition, the economy and all other unforeseen issues (we don't even know the price). If I had to guess now, based on Nintendo's current track record, I'd say yes. I think Nintendo has enough new ideas up their sleeves to make this another phenomenon.
I think it'll be close, but I'm going to say not quite. The higher price coupled with the warning for younger viewers is going to hamper things some. Mind you, I still think the 3DS will be a roaring success, and end its lifespan somewhere near the PS2, or about where the DS is now. But there's this little something in me saying it won't quite pass DS...

It will sell a lot but I'm going to say no. The market simply won't be anymore that polarized towards a single platform like in the DS/GBA years. But still so far it is a unique platform on it's concept. So who knows.
It's possible, but... uh... kinda early to say.
Being positioned as a DS plus PSP plus 3D though, the sky's really the limit.
Hopefully Nintendo will get the advertising right. Show it as a completely new device, without scaring away current users - it's a challenge.

I dont think it'll outsell the DS/DSi but it will peak around 100-120 million so extremely well.
