MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

yupp bought it back in december during steam christmas sale, but being single player only i got tired of it quite fast.

No idea why, but Neverwinter Nights. (The one made by Bioware.)

Dragon Quest - more the series than the game, when I think of the word "RPG" nothing else comes to mind first.

Also - Even though proto-RPGs/Adventures like Ultima and Wizardry existed, Dragon Quest was the series that defined the genre as we know it today - the grandfather of them all.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

erm, no.

Unless you know more than Yujii Hori himself, because he only did Dragon Quest when he tried out Wizardry and Ultima, in 1983's AppleFest in San Fransisco.

Dragon Quest defined JRPG's, but Dragon Quest elements have no prevalence outside the JRPG scope.

You need to play 4th, it's great.  It really is just a general improvement on everything.  It's pretty cool how they made even 1st level awesome and classes like fighters have more to do than basic attack and flank.

Also, I want to make one of these:

And no, ontopic, let me first start by saying this:

I know Pokemon is an RPG, don't bother "correcting" me on the following.

Looks like I was completely wrong about the Pokemon commercials, but Pokemon isn't really marketed to people as an RPG and most people, even Nintendo fans, don't think of it as an RPG.  They think of it as Pokemon, as in Pokemon is its own entity.

A kid doesn't play Pokemon because of its RPG elements, they play it for its brilliant marketing.  An adult doesn't play Pokemon because it's a deep RPG or rich narative, they play it because, again, brilliant marketing campaign.

To most people Pokemon is just not an RPG.  Aside from people that generally hang out on forums like this, which are the minority, I don't know anything that actually thinks of Pokemon as an RPG.

I really don't know how I forgot about Gotta catch them all. -_-

I plan to play 4e at some point, the Penny Arcade D&D podcasts sound delightful.

OT, and this goes for dtewi too wen he gets back:

You acknowledge that Pokemon is an RPG.

It is the best-selling RPG, year in and year out.

Ergo, it is the most popular RPG regardless of whether or not its players know that it is an RPG. It dosn't matter if they know. It's still an RPG, and it's the most popular of those games.

All games are RPGs as you take on some kind of role that is not you. So RPG means gaming not some annoying asain game/movie with androgenous teeneagers.

Seriously, I think you're right if we consider that RPG means Role Playing Game. Also lol at androgenous teeneagers.

Wrong.

RPG in the sense of video games is... ugh, I don't feel like doing this again!

Stop putting up these arguments when they're not even remotely accurate.

lol

No , I simply think that most of the pokemon game fan are gamers and they know the rpg genre and they also know that the pokemon game are rpg.

When pokemon diamond/pearl have landed on DS , 16 million have bought the game, probably a couple of million were casual. But do really think that the 8 million who have bought almost the same game twice (pokemon platine , heart / soul) were casual gamer who do not know the genre ? No , i'm pretty sure that the 8 million guy/girl were hardcore gamer who want the entire collection or/and want to puts another 100 hour to capture monster and beat the team rocket.

And all these hardcore gamer probably think 'pokemon' when there hear rpg and not by reflexe, by instinct.

Listen to what I'm saying.

The common people, the 6 billion people on earth, do not consider Pokemon to be an RPG because they don't know what it is.

Stop looking at it from a gamer's perspective, I'm talking about the entire world.

You realy seem to be desperate.

Why can't you concede that pokemon have high chance to be the first thing someone could think when he hear 'rpg' ? Is it because your have the god rank in vgchartz and you don't want to 'lose' to someone who got the newb rank ?        Is it because I have a stupid Weegee avatar I you don't want to 'lose' to someone who look like stupid or immature ?      Or is it because you can't accept that pikachu is always more popular than your vivi ?

Look it's time to stop this 'war' (always want to say this), nobody can prove or disprove that X game is the game that people think when there hear 'rpg'. IMO most people will probably think about its favorite rpg game (Exemple: Lufia 2) Someday , someone somewhere will make a big survey and then we will have our answer.

Sequel I want the most :

Patapon 3 , Elite beat Agent 2 , ROTK 12 , Mother 4, Legend of legaia      3, Resident Evil outbreak 3.

Favorite Youtube poop        McDonnald                 Morshu

It is an RPG but I just can't call it the standard because most people don't even think of it as an RPG and if you do think of it as an RPG, it's terrible.  The basic gameplay works but RPG's aren't about the gameplay, they're about characters and story which Pokemon is not.

lol wut? It's your opinion. IMO FF series characters and story are really bad, but it's an RPG anyway. The story doesn't change anything, it's the lvl up thing that made FF a RPG.
