Damn, in my sleeping hours, this thread got three pages long, mainly because of my interchange with Twestern

As Khuutra has posted what I also feel, more eloquently than I could possibly do, I'm satisfied with the conclusions that this thread has shown so far. 

I still hold to my original post, Lufia II is and will always be my first thought when it comes to RPG. Because to me, it symbolizes not only what is the best RPG to date, but also the best overall gaming experience I ever had, so that's what's "popular" to me

One game that defines the genre? That would be pretty tough to decide, but what I can say is that it's more of a nostalgic feeling when I hear the word.

Game would be either Baldur's Gate 1 or Fallout 1, those were the first real RPG games I've played and finished. WRPGs for me all the way.

Dungeons & Dragons

Gary Gygax created RPGs.  Anything with Hit Points in it evolved from D&D.

i dont even know how many hours (weeks?, months?) i've invested (wasted?) into that game too bad there is no /played command similar to WoW, i used to love  the game but now i can't stand it.
