Forums - Sales Discussion - Its time to admit it. PS3 will NEVER overtake 360.

Knee jerk reaction.

The PS3 will surely overtake the 360 LTD, the main question is if its before or after the "next box" is released.

I say thsi with confidence only because of the strength of EU and Japan combined with the fact the PS3 still has price cut boosts left.....

Im not so sure the spike in America is really due to the $150 model to be hones of the, i thought it was, but we have two weeks of increasing numbers....th eonly reason it could increase a second week was the availability of the slim, not a big software bump.

Lol @ bolded, underlined, and italicized.

MS just added features and kept the price the same.  Once Kinect and Move launch, the bundle costs will likely make the overall console purchase more expensive than they are now.  This means both consoles will still have plenty of price cut boosts left as well as feature added boosts.

I think it is far more likely that these 2 consoles will keep swapping momentums until the end of the generation and the 360 will end up being ~5-6 million ahead of the PS3.  This is because of the year head start among other things.

Well, we aree both entitled to our opinion. When the PS3 began selling for $299 WW last year compared to a $299 and $199 xbox we see where WW sales end up.

Because of this i feel when the PS3 drops to $249 and $199 it will eat up a lot of space. Granted there are unknown variables......based on Kinect it could be easier or more difficult for Sony.

But i really think its  amatter of time...because who decides the end of the generation? Thats why i said its only whether it will be before or after one company introduces a new console.

As of now the PS3 will get a decent chunk boost in Japan and Others from GT....a pretty good boost for FFV13.

The holidays will be very important, but we essentially know the two companies hands right now. Kinect and Halo vs Move and GT. There shouldnt be too many surprises this holiday but i still stand by my opinion that its still only a matter of time only because the PS3 has never been MSRP'd for less than $299 yet the xbox is currently MSRP'd for $150.....

Only time will tell, we can debate until we are red in the face but we will have a better idea post Kinect/Move.

Why do you think Kinect is going to have such a massive effect on 360 hardware?

Massive hype.

MS are awesome at advertising.

Even more casual friendly than the Wii.

Justin Beiber... lol

MS advertising and massive hype dont always work - look at Alan Wake

I think the Wii already has the casual crowd sewn up so move/kinect wont make a big dent.

AW is not a good example of Microsoft's marketing, try Halo 3.

Yeah it is over for 2nd place for PS3.

But lets be honest. Sony made a damn good attempt.

There just isn't an answer to Kinect and 360s. Especially considering 360s is the same price as PS3 Slim. And it would appear that it's the 360s selling and not the pricecut models due to rise in availability and rise in sales of 360.

EU numbers should be awesome to on July 17th week.

My city is into taking preorders for the 2nd shipment. As the first is all preordered up.

Price cut and GT5. Fair enough as an answer?

PS3 won't be getting a price cut.  360 might, though.

360 already got a price cut of 50$, didn't it? Agreed, the chances that the ps3 will get a price cut are slim but there are still GT5 and Move.

I thought people learn from their mistakes...2008,2009 and now 2010. I'm hearing the word "Doomed" too often. People should think twice before typing that word.

No, that's not a price cut. Those old consoles will be gone very soon. When the Holidays come we'll only see a $300 and $200 console.

GT5 should be big for PS3... whenever that game actually gets released. I'm not expecting much for the Move. Its a $100 bucks for the starter kit, you still need the navigation control, some games require two Move controllers, and the software seems crappy so far. Its unlikely the Move will sell many consoles and its a hell of a lot cheaper to just get a Wii.

Well if natal's price point is higher than 120$, I don't see it having much as an impact as other make it seem to be.

Natal's success depends on it's price.

GT5 won't do much for Japan, GT5P did mediocre and GT PSP totally bombed.  The franchise isn't what it used to be, and PS3 being a relatively niche platform there will probably curtail GT's more maintsream pull.  Same thing happened with Minna no Golf, it was always a million seller on PS1/PS2, now it does 500k on PS3.

Versus should be big for PS3 (and will probably stay exclusive, in Japan at least), and I think Ninokuni could be big.  The new Yakzua too maybe, but I feel they might be milking that franchise too fast...

Do not underestimate the powah of the real driving similuator. Plus GT5P was sorta like a demo.

Well the complete Move experience will run about $130 (starter kit and navigation control). Multiplayer will cost you much extra. Worst of all, its a glorified Wiimote.

The Natal is innovative technology with new potential and supports multiplayer on a single device. It'll be a success even at $150, but I imagine the real price will be around $100 to $120.

Don't jump the gun just yet.

Come back and say the PS3 is doomed when the 360 reclaims the ~3 million gap that the PS3 shaved off since the last price cut or when next generation consoles are in development.

I think the best way to look at it is if we go back prior to E3. PS3 sales were up year on year and 360 was down in a lot of areas. It was only really up in US/UK. To claw back the 1.5m they have or so Sony had to do a lot, they had a big price cut, a new model and released a lot of good games. In that period MS did almost nothing. No price cut for 2 years, in fact in some places it went up in price!, no new model, little in the way of exclusive games etc etc.

Point being a lot of Sony's momentum was down to there being no resistance from MS side. They were making profit, had a big lead over PS3, they had no reason to instantly follow Sony and reduce price. They waited their time. They let Sony play their cards because Sony needed to. Without Sony having the price cut and new model sales would of been bad and even the strongest of PS3 fanboy must admit that is true. Sony had to react to what was happening as let's be honest here they were taking a hammering.

Roll on a year and MS have started to play their cards. Everyone knew it was coming, it was no secret. There was no way MS was going to go into a 3rd year without having dropped the price officially for the 360. And as expected they drop the price and bring out a new model at e3. The realists were saying it for a long long time

In my opinion this is not MS's main card left to play. This is just a water tester. The real card they will play will be this new cheaper arcade slim. If it is the £99 rumoured then that will in my opinion be the last card MS do this gen. The console will sell by the truck load. The 1.5m Sony made back against the 360 could be wiped out pretty quickly.

As we all know sales are effected by momentum. Sony had it for almost a year. They did a lot to get it and they deserved the sales from it. They put out some of the best games of any gen on any console in the past 12 months.

The tide of momentum has now shifted back to 360. The new model is more expensive then the previous 360 but it is selling well. The real price cut will happen in a couple of months.

MS will have the new slim released in the rest of the world in the next month. The new cheaper arcade version. Kinect, But on top of that it has a couple of real AAA games in Halo and Gears. The next year is set-up to be very good sales wise for 360.

So the question becomes "what cards have sony got left to play to re-gain the momentum?".

A price cut? Sony announced recently they started to make profit on each PS3 sold. Obviously not much but profit is profit. Would they price cut and go back to making a loss? With the console now almost into it's 5th year i think they now have no choice but to concentrate on making profit. The company has not done so well over recent years making big losses. There will be no big price cut coming. A small £25 cut at best.

A new model? Not even a year since the last one, not going to happen.

Move. Buying a console and move will cost you in the region of £400. Not many people will be paying that to play move. Move will dominantly be people who already have a PS3.

GT5. This is the last true AAA game Sony has left. The game is massive and will sell millions and millions. But soon as November hits, the game is gone. Beyond that period the titles look very weak in comparison to what MS will put out. Gears 3 and Fable 3 will sell more then Killzone 3,Resistance 3 and Twisted Metal combined.

So personally i think MS have played this gen perfectly in terms of timing. This holiday will be the last big holiday for 360. Beyond this holiday they will have played their cards. There will be nothing left for them to do but start thinking about the next gen. By the end of this holiday i expect the 360-PS3 gap to have again reached 6m. At that point it becomes nearly impossible for PS3 unless they can price cut the PS3. I don't think we will see a proper price cut to that until this time next year.

As Source said a few months ago, the peak of this gen has now passed.

long read and i agree with 98.6% of it, but i think Sony and MS still have unnone factors that have yet to be revealed.

i'm a realist, but at times i become very optomistic. i see Move (even with the price you posted) doing as well as kinect. the one thing MS has done well this gen is posturing, and thats what gives/gave them there edge.

we all know where sony messed up so no argument there. if i did i woundn't make sence. the 2 things Sony still has is sequales and GT5, but only a few sequales!

Killzone3, Infamous2, Uncharted3, and LBP2

and maybe even Last Guardian and socom.

Gears3 and Fabe3?  its possible!

Resistance and Gears are the same age and neither will have any impact on sells for either console nore will Halo Reach or Twisted Metal.

with the proper bundles Sony and MS could make this more interesting especially with there motion controles.

and i don't think price cuts will have any efect on console sells unless they are dramatic! atlease a $100 or $150 price drop. something to put Sony and MS on Nintendos playing feild, but for me i'd just like to see it all play out. i made my contrabution on the console side. still got alot of games to buy though LoL.

you made a great point.
