Forums - General - iPhone4 losing connection when held?

It's so funny. I was fiddling with my Mum's new iPhone 4, and it really does work, you just need to hold in your left hand. The problem is that you don't have to hold it in a weird way or anything, just hold it in your left hand

It's still not that big of a deal.  It's still a design flaw, but it's not the mountain people are making it out to be.

It happens when you touch a  specific piece of the phone with bare skin which you would typically touch when holding it with your left hand.  There are two very simple fixes for this: 1) put a small piece of tape on the area you're not supposed to touch or 2) put a cover on your iPhone.

Both of those completely eradicate that problem.  Considering I don't know anyone who doesn't use some sort of case for their iPhone, not many people should really even care about this.  For those foolish people that don't use a case, how many of those do you think are left handed and actually hold the thing in their left hand?

I was at a BBQ last week and 6 of my friends there had iphones and none used cases.  Some people don't want to ruin the look of their pretty device with an ugly silicon case, by the same token they will not be sticking bits of tape on the phone either.  Once again though people will defend Apple's insistance of form over function, it's madness.

thats a pretty serious flaw...

Apple says it isn't a design flaw... People are just holding the phone "wrong" lol gotta love the PR spin

And here I thought they'd market it as a "feature", to prevent you from holding it too tight, and thus cramping your hand. (Or cracking the screen, but that doesn't sound as good from PR...)

I'm not defending the design flaw (I even say it's a design flaw if you read the post), I'm just saying it's not a big deal.  Even if you don't use a cover, it's a very small piece of clear tape, again, not a big deal.  It sucks that it's there but it's also an extremely easy workaround.

I know an extremely large amount of people with iPhones that range from giant Apple dorks to giant dorks to non-techy to even a guy that developed a certain highly successful app (it was even featured in one of the iPhone commercials!) and all but I think maybe two of them don't have a cover.  From everything I've ever seen, it's safe to say most iPhone owners own a cover.  I'm not saying all, just most.

Obviously no design flaw is better but when most people aren't even going to notice it (whether they're right handed or use a case) and those that do (lefties that don't want a case) have an easy fix it's not something you should rush out and grab the toches and pitchforks over.

So this isn't a big deal.

1.  It only happens if you don't have a case.
2.  It's not even 100%, I couldn't even get it to happen with my friends iPhone 4 and it has only happened to him rarely.
3. If you're real worried and you don't want to use a cover, just stick a small piece of tape on the magic spot.

yeah right,we buy phones to stick tape on them and to buy a case

Well I will take this from a personal perspective. I use an XPERIA X10, which is a of a similar size to the iPhone, but maybe slightly bigger. I have a slip case, which covers everything up, when in my pocket, because my main concern is for the screen, so when I actually use it, I take it out the case. And while I do sometimes use it with my right hand, I prefer to hold in my left hand in a way that would cover up that little area, ruining the phone and then use my right index finger. So for me, the iPhone 4 would just not work at all...

I could use tape, but I dont want a bit of tape under my hand every time I use the phone. Of course, I do use it that way because of the huge screen, so it might be slightly less of a problem with the smaller iPhone screen, but if I had one it would certainly be a problem, and I am sure there are people who are in the same situation as I am.

This is a serious hardware fault, and it is not acceptable in a product like this
