Not sure how important this is? PS2 only had support for 2 players, I don't think this stunted much of its' growth. Are there very many simultaneous 4 player games on the Wii? Without dismissing this entirely, maybe forcing people to 'take turns' like in Wii Sports makes it more of a family experience? Everyone focusing on their own screen can sometimes be less social.

Wii Sports supported four players simultaneously with doubles tennis. Bowling and golf were also four players, though given the nature of the sports you do have to take turns.
Between Wii Sports and Red Steel, half the Wii's launch lineup supported four player multiplayer.
Then there's Mario Kart, the epitome of four player games.
I could name plenty more, but Wii Sports and Mario Kart are the two most pivotal games in the Wii's success alongside Wii Fit. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is right behind them, and it is also four players, though it does use motion controls rather sparingly.
