Forums - Microsoft - Kotaku asks developers, "Will Kinect really not work while you're sitting?"

The Kotaku article has been updated with a statement from a Micosoft spokesperson confirming that gesture control for the dashboard does not work while seated as of this time:

UPDATE: A Microsoft spokesperson told me after the publication of this article that the company is certain that Kinect gesture control will work for movies, ESPN and other "entertainment" features before the sensor is launched. As I originally reported, that is not an implemented feature yet. The spokesperson was not able to provide any update on the Kinect's tolerance of a person who sits while playing games.

So now its official.....how the hell is this not implemented yet? Wow, of all things we've discussed about the reasons for success or failure, did we ever see this coming?

I sure as heck didn't.  I figured the main downfall would be the lag.  Around 1/2 a sec I counted in vids of the Forza demo.  Which is probably the reason the acceleration/braking is completely  automated, as well as a reason the game also has assisted steering.  Kinectimals seems to make up for the lag by having you jump at a promp, which is then followed by the animals action a second later.

But never in a million years would I have guessed it was because you couldn't sit down, something they showed you could do in several ads for the device last E3.  Then again, we can't really use anything from last year's E3 as a guide since the internal processor was still present at that time.

And someone said they still had 5 months left to fix it.  However, that's not completely true.  Right now they have roughly 4 1/2 months til launch.  But, they have far less than that to fix the issue.  They have to confirm the final product so developors know FULLY what they have to work with.  Plus, they need weeks, if not months, to mass produce these things for launch.  Then they have to run quality tests on the HW.  Given MS record, I'm going to assume this may not be fully fixed by launch.

they HAVE to fix sitting or else their Kinect games will all be stand-ventric games and the core gamer wont like that very much,

I asked one of the two members of Forza development studio Turn 10 if I could play their demo sitting down. They said I could not, that it was "optimized for standing."

How are you supposed to accelerate and brake then?

Voice recognition.

Accellerate by going "VRRRRRM VVRRRRRRRMMMM VVVRRRRRRMMMMM"

Brake by screeching in staccato.

Oh my god. How can something be that awful and awesome at the same time?

The problem and potential liability I see is Kinect gamers getting injured while playing it. From a legal standpoint, requiring sitting for games precludes many lawsuits. If people break ankles, strain backs, and on from having to play Kinect standing up, then it will make  Wii itis and Wii controllers breaking flat screen HD TVs look desirable in the courtroom.

People have sued McDonald's for scalding coffee, I am sure there are a few underemployed lawyers with a love for Apple and a hate for Microsoft who would love to take a class action lawsuit over Kinect to court.

A simple terms of service can solve this potential problem, never was an issue for Wii to my knowledge.

If something as obvious as sitting down hasnt been implemented yet i wonder how theyll hand laying down, multiple people laying down, people sitting in front of other people, coffee tables in front of people, pets etc. If th eproblem is the plain in which Natal is reading......

Some of us who were skepticle had brought up similar but far less rudimentary questions about natal from the get go, how does it know who to focus on, will there be confusion of voices or objects or multiple persons? It seems many of us overlooked this since a tagline for the device has lways been hands free control from your couch and i guess we all assumed by controlling our TV we would be sitting.

I have no doubt theyll find a way to fix this, but as others have said, people have been sitting playing games in the original ads, so it was obviously meant to be...they havent been able to do it in a year, so im wondering what OTHER complications will pop up if something this obvious has yet to be resolved.

Lots of question marks, will probably be the most fun fall to watch so far in my lifetime.

LOL, should I ever become king, er, president of USA, I'd do my best to make the congress approve a law that not only allows, but obliges judges to spit in the eyes of people and their lawyers filing stupid lawsuits and kick their bottoms until they become purple.

Oh I assume they will get everything nice and sorted eventually. Its just that its incredibly complicated software, which is why both Sony and Nintendo stayed away from this kind of implementation and why Microsoft is the only one to dare to try. So long as its good enough at launch and is continually updated I see no problems with the interface. Its a software issue and software can be patched.

You're correct that Nintendo wouldn't dare implement Kinect into it's own console.
