Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft dismisses 3D as "future" technology

It's the big E3 focus for Sony and Nintendo, but Microsoft UK boss Neil Thompson has dismissed 3D as "an interesting technology of the future" that's still too expensive for consumers.

Thompson instead backed the experience of Kinect, the company's hands-free motion-control tech, over the 3D experiences offered by rivals.

"If you look at the costs of entry into the living room and when that's going to become mass-market, we think the offering with Kinect and the natural user-interface we're bringing, that's a more compelling proposition for consumers over the coming years than maybe looking at 3D at this point."

Does that mean the 360 wont be getting native stereotopic 3D games?

I'd agree that Sony's 3D is a bunch of overly expensive, enthusiast-only bullshit. The 3DS seems like the real deal, however.

This guy was in a different world when Nintendo unveiled the 3DS.  Totally different.

The 3DS will be cheaper than Kinect though and that's the funny part.

I don't know if that will be true, but damn will it be funny.

This time next year 3D televisions will be readily affordable for the average person. I admit in the short term its worthless due to its price, but by the time games like Killzone 3 come out it will be a much larger factor.

Time for hype

well I wouldn't take his word for it, because Microsoft has already said they have shown interest in 3D gaming (atleast from what I've read) and when they said "1080P is impossible on consoles" it ended up being added into the 360.

So who knows.. when the PS3 launched 1080p tv's were $3000 plus, today they are fairly cheap, so I suspect 3D tv's will follow suit.. and sony is going to have the only console with native 3D games.

As for the 3DS being cheaper than $149, if that happens then it will sell like hot cakes, but I have a feeling there is a reason nintendo didn't announce the price today.. it's not cheap to make at the moment.

"Waaah, waah, damage control, 3D is t3h future even though full-body motion control is just as, or even more, futuristic! T3h price as well, even though ours is a tad absurd." -Thompson

It seems he was not referring to handheld 3D as everyone agrees the 3DS will be a success.  But, for home console 3D for Xbox, PS3, and PC I think he is right...at least for the next two years.  After that hopefully TV tech will have advanced past 3D w/glasses and into Parallax glass-free solutions for large TVs (same as the 3DS small screen).
