Forums - Nintendo - Saving Wii channels to SD cards

Hello everyone, it's been a long time since my last post. That doesn't mean I'm not up to date with gaming news or this site, I just like reading (mostly) everyone's (mostly) awesome comments on this site more so than writing one up.

However, I was left behind somewhere last year on Wii firmware updates. I have a huge question. Is it possible to save Wii channels to a SD card? More specifically, can you save virtual console/Wiiware games to a SD card?

I remember it was not possible a long time ago but as I've already said, I no longer know to what extent is my previous statement true. Help?

Yes, Wii Channels and VC games can both be copied to, and run from the SD card. When you run a program that is on the SD, it is temporarily copied into a buffer on the Wii itself to avoid slow downs. Even very large games copy quite quickly though.

Yes. But make sure you move the Channel Data only! Do not move the save data or else you'll be starting the game over every time. lol Also, when you load a game from the SD Menu, it temporarily gets put back onto the Wii Menu, so make sure your Wii has plently of room to play the larger games. This has been possible since March 2009 btw. :3

See the bold :P

As far as I know, it has always been possible to move channels, Wiiware, and VC games to SD cards.  You just had to move them back to the Wii if you wanted to use them.  Now it is possible to play WiiWare and VC games directly from SD cards.  There should be a button to get to the SD card menu on the lower left side of the channel select screen on your Wii.  From there you can select a game and it will play without having to move it back to the Wii's memory.

As others have said, make sure you keep the save files saved to the Wii, not the SD card.  Also make sure you have enough open blocks available on the Wii.  500 open blocks should be plenty to play anything.

Awesome! But can I then move the files from the SD card to another Wii?

I've never tried.

No. The files are encrypted and only work on one Wii.
