Forums - Sony - Killzone 3: Much Better Quality Trailer + Framerate Talk

Apparently there's an 83mb version of the trailer up on Sony's press site that doesn't look like ass like the ones on Gametrailers and the Killzone website do.  Gamersyde has been nice enough to upload it in both 60fps and a less compressed 30fps version.

Yes, a 60fps version.  Why, mighy you ask?  SamBishop over on gaf sheds some light on that:

3D has literally jacked the engine into overdrive. You have nothing to worry about on the framerate front if you're playing in 2D; even in the game's year-out unoptimized state, the 2D version would regularly swing above 30 and into damn near 60 territory when playing it a few weeks back.

If anything, 3D is actually benefiting you 2D-only folks (and yes, I am one of you despite being utterly floored by 3d tech lately) by forcing the engines to spit out more frames and thus giving you a smoother game without the fancy pants TV. As for whether or not the game will be locked at 30, that's something Guerrilla says they're debating, but you're getting a vastly improved engine even with all the increased detail. Dancin' time.

Edit:  Stupid quote boxes still don't work in OPs. The above two paragraphs are the words of SamBishop!

Downloaded both and they both look the same to me (30 and 60fps). Although it's a little different as this one has the backstab/stab in the eye part that they didnt show in the one in gametrailers.

wait so the game runs between 30-60 but mostly closer to 60fps?

lolzz? That's kinda nuts considering the graphics that need to run at that high framerate (KZ2)

I really hope they're gonna lock it at 30 FPS. No way in hell they'll be able to lock 2D gameplay to 60 FPS, so unless they lock it at 30, the framerate is probably gonna fluctuate wildly, and that just sucks to play with.

Please please please lock it!

Where is CGI??  He must see this!

why not just lock it at 45fps..

^LOL locked in at 45fps? That's a first. I can only imagine if it were to be locked in at 60fps, running sooo smoothly with graphics like that, it'd be amazing....Sony fanboys would go nuts

The consoles these days displays new content with a 60 Hz refresh rate. For a 30 FPS game, this means a new frame is ready every other refresh, and for a 60 FPS game, every refresh.

If you use 45 FPS, you won't have a consistent output, because you can't have a steady refresh. That's why most games aim for either 30 or 60 FPS, because it fits with the 60 Hz refresh rate.

Other than Melee and scale, didn't really get much out of the trailer.

I think 3D might be a general upgrade for 2D players as well, there seems to be much more of a focus on higher framerates with it. SSHD got a pretty substantial 2D upgrade as well from its upgrade to 3D.
