3D Xbox plans to be announced 'soon'

Is Microsoft preparing an E3 announcement?
Microsoft is preparing to announce plans for 3D Xbox 360 display soon according to Blitz Game Studios co-founder Andrew Oliver.

"Microsoft are going to be making an announcement about it at some point soon," he said at a Westminster eForum event in London today.

In fact, Oliver said that the 360 was already fully equipped for 3D, reaffirming Microsofts claim earlier today that 3D would continue to evolve on their console

"Our game did come out in 3D on the Xbox 360, so 3D is possible, even through an HDMI 1.2 cable. Ubisoft created Avatar, which includes a mode for 3D on a 3D TV. It is just a case of adding a mode into the options menu, so there's no need for two different products."

Although there's obviously no mention of a date, a prime time to announce direct competition with Sony in this way would be at E3 next week.

Not a 360 fanboy, just a PS3 fanboy hater that likes putting them in their place ^.^

I'd be surprised if we don't see 3D on 360. 360 is more than capable for 3D @ 720p resolution.

Slightly more so than PS3 if you ask me since it has a better video card (unified memory and architecture).  3D gaming is all video card fill rate and memory bandwith...

But to be honest, I am not really excited for either Ps3/360 3D. Being spoon fed selective 3D titles flat out sucks when you have a massive library of emulators, games and programs on the PC which are 3D enabled already.

It'll come and likely work fine, but MS won't make the big deal about it that Sony is.  Sony is trying to sell TV's too.

Well they already added an hdmi connection after it launched, there's no reason they couldn't start shipping models with the upgraded hdmi connection to be *exactly* like the PS3 connection.

Personally, I dont' see why as its not going to create much of a jump in consoles sales at this time due to the costs associated with the new TVs and glasses. I'd keep their solution for 3D as is and not spend any more money.

They really don't need an upgraded HDMI. The current HDMi can do 720p x2. Do you really think 360 (or PS3) can do higher res 3D at 1080p x2 for a retail title?

The thing is, MS has 0 money to make from 3D. They are not selling you 3000 dollar TVs. And the amount of people buying PS3's for 3D will be too low to even bother trying to get a piece of that pie. Thats the only reason why MS hasn't announced 3D gaming. 360 is perfectly capable of doing it...

I didn't say 3D on the 360 wasn't possible, as it obviously is. I was relating to the fact that the latest HDMI spec has a new channel and specification strictly for the new 3D tvs and that cannot be done on the current HDMI hardware in the 360. The rest of your argument is basically what I implied. Its just not worth the extra costs to change production to now include the updated HDMI, when the current model can technically do HD quality 3D games.

I see... yeah you are correct there.

This new TV spec is really not something MS needs to bother upgrading HDMI for.  All it does is it tells the TV which 3D format the game is using.  With the 360, if they decide to bother with 3D, I suspect they will do it with software drivers, like with the PS3...

I actually hate the fact that HDMI 1.4 standardized 3D. Up until now one could find a way to run 3D media content on almost any kind of 3D format. Things are going to be a lot more limited moving forward.

For example, PS3 had 2 3D games released before the update (Avatar and Invincible tiger). One could make these 2 games work with 3D vision on the PC by plugging the PS3 in to a video capture card and, setting the game and display to interlaced, or side by side format and playing the capture card video in the 3D player. Works like a charm...

However the new 3D games for sony, which use the EXACT same 3D display method will not allow this. They just look for HDMI 1.4 plug otherwise they say "3D display not detected" and only show the game in 2D. Nvidia forums were quite pissed about this today...lol. All the 120 hz monitors and 3D TVs used for 3D PC gaming do not have HDMI 1.4.  Sony wants your money and they want you to buy brand new glasses, brand new TV...
