And thus become the 4th and 5th best selling home consoles ever, with only 2 previous gen consoles selling better (PS & PS2)

NES total sales were 61.91 million

360 is currently 40.06 million

PS3 is 35.11 million.

360 can do it in 2 years, PS3 could do it in 2 or 2.5 years.

I think they'll both cross that line. Of course the other question is which one will do it first?

Interesting question. While I am no expert sales analyst nevertheless I'll say it will probably depend on how long the current generation of consoles stay on the market and even then considering that they both will likely surpass the NES.

Which just shows how much the gaming industry has expanded over the years.

As to which one will do first I'll say it's a tossup (with maybe the PS3 doing it first.) it's still difficult to say for certain.

I don't expect a new Playstation or a new Xbox till 2012, so I think both will reach over 60 million easily, especially because of natal and move. Call me insane, but PS3 and Xbox360 will both probably be around 80-100 million sales at the end of this gen.

They definitely will.

I'm iffy about the 360 because MS could release a new console. But the release of the Natal tells me they'll support the 360 for years to come.

That's not the question. You've just crowbarred Wii into this discussion for no good reason.

You may have not noticed but HD consoles are the best selling 2nd and 3rd place consoles ever. The PS3 hasn't actually passed the Genesis yet, but it will this year.

PS3 will cross that line, i don't know about the 360...seems likely.

And no, the Wii will NOT pass the PS1 in lifetime sales, probably, the Wii will have its sucessor next year, since they're losing marketshare.

Yes and yes, according to my predictions:

360

End of 2010:        48 million
End of 2011:        57 million
End of 2012:        63 million
End of 2013:        67 million

PS3

End of 2010:        45 million
End of 2011:        58 million
End of 2012:        70 million
End of 2013:        79 million

I think the most interesting question is if any HD console reaches 100 million lifetime.  PS3 may do it with a $99 price tag in 2014-2015.
