Forums - General Discussion - can religion be blamed for war?

Relgion has been the main cause of war for years. Read your history books. Excuse are not,it's still has been the root cause of war for centuries.

Religion makes it easier for wars to occur, but in most cases religion isn't the cause for war. For instance, the Crusades were caused by European desire to conquer new lands and acquire wealth (just as the Muslims did in the Balkans and Iberia), but it was easier to recruit soldiers, raise money, and keep morale high by using religion as the reason.

This ^

And because the crusades failed we started looking for new trade routs as the east was blocked by more powerful empires(Islam, China). And that's how colonization of the world began and how Christianity spread like a .......

But religion had massive influence on the European powers during the middle ages. A German emperor of the first reich even had to kiss the feet of a pope and beg for forgiveness. They could convince the European powers to take up their arms and fight a "Holy War" against the Muslims.

^ These

Not only in the middle ages, Hitler's ideology was built on both racial and religious grounds. Religion is still today a great brain washing machine.

What kind of anger do you expect to produce if you get masses to believe :

There is a paradise and a hell,

Everything is justified in the eyes of god but not understandable by you,

Science is a conspiracy,

People of other religions have less value,

etc. etc.

Yes, most definitely. Although I don't have time to elaborate entirely, I'll be back later to do that.

It's caused some wars, as do a lot of things that divide people. Mostly though, religion is used by leaders to manipulate the masses into believing that a war is just and right. Religion is a very powerful tool in getting support from the people to go to war. If we didn't have religion it would be harder to find a powerful enough excuse or ideology that would enable the leaders to readily go to war.

Yes.

In fact religion is the number 1 drug that has caused the most deaths in history. If it wasn't such a widespread drug it would have already been banned by people with half a brain. It's like having the world being controlled by people on Heroin 24/7 for the past 2000 years.

Edit: To clarify, the masses are the drug abusers and the leaders are the drug dealers.

To answer the question in the title: Yes. If video games can be blamed for violence, a dog can be blamed for making a man murder, and Betty Rubble can be blamed for making me masturbate, then yes--religion can be blamed for war. That doesn't mean that religion, that dog, Betty Rubble, or video games is the actual cause, though.

And can the world be a better place with no religion? I think that religion is one of the reasons people aren't worse. If all that was keeping people from doing wrong was the law, I'd have killed and raped you all by now. The fact that someone told me, a long time ago, that God was watching my every move (knowing that he's watching when I have sex really turns me on!) and that I'd go to Hell if I killed and raped you guys is the only thing keeping you all safe. I would have made it look like an accident, too.

I guess the world would be better without SOME of those religions, but who am I to judge? I'm just a man who likes boobs.

If you want to go with analogies, then religion is most like a cancer. It spreads insidiously (blind faith parent -> children who put their whole trust at their parents), hard to get rid of, and it is extremely harmful to the body (humanity).

Thankfully people have been wising up over the past cetury or two. Give it a few more and religion will, hopefully, be completely eradicated.

As for people who think that religion actually helps. The proportions of eligous vs non-religions inmates is ridiculouly in favor of the religious, it doesn't even come close to the real world proportions.

No religion in the Universe supports war and hates it. The fact is that, how much we follow our religions?

All that I would say has been said by others, religion has been used as a scapegoat. The real problem is mankind is savage and violence is natural for us.
