Sonic 3D works, and Sonic Adventure is a good example, but after this, Sonic games were terrible.
Alternating 3D and 2D would be a great idea to reach everyone's tast

I'm one of the few who has consistently favored Sonic Team as a superior developer. I would certainly put them up in my top 5 for creating games i love, up there with Intelligent Systems, Nintendo EAD, and Retro Studios.
They're probably the only 3rd party studio i trust to create a satisfying experience, maybe aside from Grasshopper Manufacture.

Back in the day when Sonic team was creted they were as good as any other studio in the industry. But key people left with the demise of the dreamcast... by 2005 (shadow the hedgehog) that team was in ruins.
These days they fit right next to definition "mediocre". The sonic team games aren't terrible, but they aren't anything memorable.
