Forums - Microsoft - How do I get sound to my X360?

You do not need the VGA cable to have both the HDMI and AV cables connected.  All you need to do is take off the bulky plastic housing from the AV cable using a knife.  It takes all of 30 seconds and does not damage the internals of the cable connector in any way.  Once that is done, the AV cable connector will be slim enough that booth it and an HDMI cable will fit.  After that use the RCA red white cable with a cheap adapter to mini stereo for audio and HDMI to DVI for video.

Except he's been gaming in SD and most likely doesn't have an HDMI cable for the 360... Howmuch does an HDMI cable plus DVI adapter cost these days? Prolly more than the VGa cable he found...

Also he would be cosmetically runing an RCA cable for his 360... That solution is cool and is the "Macgyver" way to go, but it really isn't saving anyone any time or money.

He wants a cable that he can use on his PS3 also, so a HDMI to DVI cable is the best solution(you don't need a separate adapter). Bought one from ebay for about $20 i believe.

"Forced EDIT" lol

@Anthony, that trick sounds tricky...

Thank you all, so far! Im going to my electronics store now and see if they have these cables and adapters for cheap.

I guess that makes sense... I just wouldn't want to ruin my RCA 360 cables.

It's not trust me, been using it for a long time and it works great. The plastic casing snaps right off. Then you can buy something like this:

These days you can get one for like $10, and you can use it on the PS3 aswell.

Edit: by the way in the guide he takes off all of the plastic, i left the upper part on so it looks clean aswell.

Thank you all for the help. I hooked up my X360 to my PC monitor yesterday and I get sound from headphones that I stick into this adapter you showed me to get:

And then I used the screwdriver trick you showed me where you remove the plastic off of the AV cable so you have room to plug in a HDMI to DVI cable into the HDMI slot on the X360.

It's the first time I play in HD on my own Xbox 360 in this generation.

And it's so sweet. Multiplatforms have almost the same quality of graphics as my powerful PC!

Man guys, that took a lot, lol.

@ Slimebeast I'm glad you have a solution that you are happy with, headphones are the way to go anyway, even an average pair. If in the future you decide to use the HDMI/modded av cable on a different setup like in your living room with hdmi going to the tv for video and an opticl cable going to an av receiver for audio, I have a little heads up for you. For some reason when you have both the original av cable and an hdmi cable plugged into your Xbox at the same time and you switch inputs on your tv, it powers the 360 off then back on again real quick. For example, say you are in a multiplayer lobby waiting for the next match and you want to check the score of a baseball game real quick. You switch inputs on your tv to your cable box, check the game then switch back to your xbox input. When you switch back, your xbox will be resetting, it sucks. There is a work around that involves further opening up that plug and reconfiguring some wires and shit but I doubt you wanna do that. Like I said, just a heads up.

Also for all your adapter needs (and many other AV  needs), Monoprice is awesome.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

Yeah it took a lot. What a mess lol to just hook up some cables!

And yes in the future I plan to hook it up kinda like you described. I have a very nice audio system that I wanna connect to my X360 and the HDTV I will get. But I don't want my X360 to reset in the middle of games lol.
