Forums - Sony - If I own Mario kart, should I buy Modnation Racers?

(Well, not so much buy as convince my PS3 owning friend whose PS3 I currently possess to buy it)

I haven't really been keeping up to date with MNR, the things I've heard are "it's really good" and the contents of this thread here

http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=110007&page=1#

5 of the 6 points raised there are reasons why I love Mario Kart, and it seems that this game is similar in many respects

So my questions are

How is the content creation system? Please use either LBP or Spore as reference points if possible because I've played them.

Are the items actually similar to Mario Kart in how they work?

How many racers are there in each race?

Does the game control well? And does it use sixaxis btw?

and finally, if I own and love mario Kart, will I find enough new in here to warrant a purchase?

The content creation is more free than LBP from an aesthetic point of view, so you have more freedom to make your mod and kart look exactly like how you want than you have to customize your sackboy, but the tracks don't have near the freedom as levels in LBP.  There are some simple triggers, and you have alot of control over qualities of the racing track, but you can't make anything other than a racing track.

The items work similar to DiddyKongRacing (so I've heard, I didn't play DKR enough to remember this for myself) where if you get an item, and don't use it before getting another one you can increase the weapon's level up to level three.  However if you are hit by someone else's weapon yours will go down a level so it's not always best to save up.

12 racers can be in a race

I like how it controls, but it takes physics into account more than Mario Kart does so it takes a bit of practice to get used to the drifting, there is no sixaxis controls to my knowledge.

I can't answer that for you.

...

If you own New Super Mario Bros Wii should you buy Little Big Planet?

If you own Killzone 2 should you buy Halo: Reach?

If you own Alan Wake should you buy Heavy Rain?

If you own Modern Warfare 2 should you buy Battlefield 2?

If you own Lost Odyssey should you buy Final Fantasy XIII?

If you own Grand Theft Auto IV should you buy Red Dead Redemption?

Why is it if you own one game you suddenly can't own a similar game?

They're the same genre but they aren't the same game.

HELL YEAH!!!

Yes, people that completely miss the point of posts do exist.

Thanks Torillian. I'm not overly bothered by aesthetic user generated content so I think I shant get the game Edit: At least not immediately, I'll wait to see the calibre of levels that can be made and maybe wait for a price drop

@ twesterm - They are some good examples of games that you would want to own multiple similar games.

However, can you really say that if you owned Mario Kart: Wii, that you would pay $50 for Mario Kart: Double Dash? What about Pokemon Black and Pokemon White? Nintendogs: Labrador and Nintendogs: Poodle?

Fact is, all the games you pointed out (except the shooters, which in the case of Battlefield vs MW2 they are completely different games anyway) are plot based games that have a start point and an end point. Mario Kart and MNR are completely different which is why I am asking if these are the sorts of games where there is a point owning both.

Again, you're missing the point.

I'm not saying you absolutely have to buy one if you have the other and the OP isn't saying anything about budget.  Actually read the OP and then answer.  The premise of this thread is if you own x game and it is similar to y game , should you get it?

This isn't about budget, this is about should you own two similar games.  The answer to anyone paying attention is yes, there is nothing wrong with that.

Reading comprehension, it's a great thing to have.

This is the thought that occured to me as well, though in a less accusatory tone... :)

It's going to be a fun game, I'd say, from the demo.  Why not download the demo?  You can get a good sense of the track building from it.

My impressions on track creation:

The track creation is truly impressive for people who don't want the open-ended freedom of LBP and the ability to engineer different genres and whatnot.  It's impressive because it's so quick to use.

You select "start a new track," and appear in a huge piece of empty terrain.  You drive your little guy to where you want the track to start, and press x.  That puts you in track creation mode.  Then, you drive around and as you drive the track gets created behind you.  You can create hills and valleys by moving the right stick up and down as you drive.  You can drive under or over track you've already put down and the necessary tunnels and bridges are automatically created.  If you get bored, you can hold the x button at any time and the track auto-completes for you.  The game then asks you if you want it to auto-populate your track.  If you say yes, trees, houses, and other kinds of scenery spring up in few seconds around your track, and powerups and hazards are added as well.  If you want to do it by hand, you can.

The track creation is so easy that I just created four tracks with a friend just as I was showing them the demo.  They kept coming up with suggestions for new tracks, so we kept making them.  Each track took less then five minutes to make, and looks complete with scenery and powerups all over the place.

One big question is how well the track search engine will work for people who are just looking for awesome tracks to play.  That definitely remains to be seen.
