Forums - Sales - Does anyone think PS3 can realistically get to second place?

Edit: Actually looking at it, the number of "anticipated exclusives" in Japan between Xbox 1 & 360 is pretty comparable!  For comparison, I used only sequels who (1) weren't simply limited to exclusivity windows and (2) were in a series or franchise who'd sold reasonably well on consoles (100k+) in at least the previous gen...

The PS3 is currently on track to overtake the 360 before the end of 2011.

So one would have to believe that Natal will save the day for MS, or that a significant price drop is due in 2010 to think otherwise.

If MS announced their annual projections, it would be a pretty simple affair to see where they themselves predict the gap will be in the same time frame.

As for any claims that "the generation ends as soon as someone releases a new console": ridiculous. It ends when the last man standing ceases production and support.

You don't win a race by dropping out prematurely and then claim victory because you were ahead before you quit and your opponents passed you.

The PS2 is still selling.  Still has games... and it's the next generation.  There is nothing ridiculious about it.

The PS2 also won the 6th gen.

And?  The Gamecube was also still selling and had games coming out in this generation for a while.  Same with Dreamcast with games.

I understand your argumentation, but personally I think it makes sense to think of a generation being at it's end once the consoles of the following generation begin to sell more units in a quarter.

This while Microsoft did everything in their might to sell better, quickly killing the original XBox, mass misinformation and propaganda spreading with regard to its rivals, in 2008 the 360 was priced in Europe as low as 119 Euro including taxes for the holidays, they bought many Japanese exclusives (for a system almost nobody cares about) and they nearly killed their PC gaming division by making their popular PC franchices including Halo XBox exclusive.

Speaking of which...MS didn't kill the origonal xbox, Nvidea did...a techie such as yourself should know that. saying that nobody cares about the 360 seems a bit pretenciouse given that just a few people purchased it, Halo is not an exclusive, 1 and 2 are on the pc, and you really need to settle down.

The last straw seems to be Natal and they hyped this up by faking Milo presentations. And it is probably going to underliver compared to what was promised.

How is this the last straw? It's gonna put a sizeable dent in PS3 sales, of this I'm almost positive. Milo was not a "fake" presentation by any means, the fact that you say it is tells me once again you are bent on spreading misinformation, why you degrade yourself in this way is beyond me.

Whether PS3 does or does not surpass XBOX360 to take 2nd place is becoming less and less important. The reality is that even if the PS3 assumes 2nd place it will be in a significantly diminished position compared to the previous 2 generations when sony were ever so dominant and actually making money on consoles. Now on the other hand if the 360 takes 2nd or 3rd for that matter, it will have reversed its fortunes consiserably compared to the last gen - and couple that with the fact that its actually making money now. All the while though, Wii will continue to enjoy its current dominence while the other 2 are left to fight it out for nothing more than a token position - noting that ps3 will have been the real loser in this gen. Why many cant see it for what it really is, is truly baffling to say the least.

Doesn't matter. MS owners won't care, they'll just wanna buy the next 360 and help MS "win" next gen even moreso.
And it's already lost a lot this gen in order to have a strong next-gen. So this gen doesn't really matter for Sony, but they better make a lot more next gen.

Of course it will.

I have a buddy (PC gamer) who bought a PS3 for the bluray.  After a couple days he went out and bought MW2.  We just got finished playing RDR.  Is the bluray a plus?  Of course.  That said, people who own PS3's play games.  Matter of fact, I would argue against the research claiming folks only buy PS3's for the bluray for one simple reason.  99 out of 100 people who would fall in that catagory would rather have a regular bluray with a regular remote control.  It's true that you can buy a regular remote for the PS3 but those who are just looking for a bluray player will likely pass on the hastle.  Case and point, everyone I know who owns a bluray (non PS3) has given this excuse as the reason they didn't buy a PS3 instead of a regular bluray player.

Well yes there is next gen and I truly reckon that all 3 will want to pull their fingers out cos boy with all the 3D talk paired with all the motion stuff - it is going to be hugely competetive. That said, it will have to be all about Games! Games! and more (and better) Games!!
