Before Red Dead Redemption suddenly became a smash hit.....

RDR will do most of it's sales on 360 (just like GTA4).  PS3 still benefits from a stronger multiplatform spread, but it's dearth of notable exclusives until fall will guarantee lower software sales than Wii.

GTA4 did 6.52 mill on PS3, 7.8 mill on 360 and that was at a time when the 360 had a much better install base advantage percent wise...

Er, what?  I'm not sure how things changes anything I've just said?

Basically, nothing on PS3 will sell as well as Mario Galaxy 2, Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort until fall.  PS3 doesn't have a FFXIII or a GOW3 to draw in sales this summer, which is the only reason it was even close to Wii figures previously during Wii's empty (in terms of AAA releases) Q1.  Wii has the biggest new release, plus bundled titles, plus far, far stronger evergreens (NSMB, Wii Fit Plus, Mario Kart, Just Dance, etc).  I'm actually a little curious why you'd think PS3 could even approach Wii software in the immediate future?

@Jarrod More than likely if the rumored Move release of July turns out to be true, although I'm not holding my breath. It's probably going to be part of the Move and 3D gaming launch. Not to mention all the other potential software that will be launching with Move.

Just to clarify, when I started this thread, (not bad for my first, eh? :p) I meant WEEKLY sales, as in would the PS3 start outselling the Wii on a weekly basis, not lifetime.

This said, feel free to discuss that as well. Personally, I just can't see the PS3 overtaking the Wii with a 35 million gap between them, I just thought that with only a 40k weekly gap, PS3 allegedly held back by shortages, and a lack of big Wii hardware movers in the next few months...

What title capable of selling more than 500k are getting released on the Wii in the next 3 months ?

SMG2 and Tiger Woods 11, that's about it...........

 

PS3 got RDR ( this week), Mod Nation's Racers, Blur, UFC 2010.

And early August , Madden 11 !



PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Basically I'm calling now that PS3 software will beat Wii software at least 4 weeks before end of August....( it did not win a single week last year over the same period and never did better than 60% of Wii software on any given week...)

Negatory.

The question of whether the PS3 could have outsold the Wii back during this most recent period of lots of big PS3 releases if it had not been hardware constrained and we'd added 20 k to the PS3 sales for teh lulz is a much harder one to answer. The question posed in the OP is not even close to being possible
