Well the dialogue from GTA4 is already Oscar-worthy, so if this dialogue is better than that, what else are we supposed to call it?

GTAIV has a 1,000 page script.  Heavy Rain's comes nowhere close.  GTA wins by default.

Heavy Rain is 2,000 page script btw.

An average published page has about 400 words.

No fucking way Heavy Rain has an 800,000 word script.

you do know that scripts =/= book

they have lots of spaces, and things that arent said, but describe the scene such as movements the character does.

I dunno how many pages it is though.

Well the average manuscript page is about 250 words.

No fucking way Heavy rain has a 500,000 word script. The entire Lord of the Rings Trilogy is barely 300,000.

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

The overwhelming majority know full well how crappy Heavy Rain's script is and how much worse the voice work makes it.

Heavy Rain is praised for the way it immerses and engages you in its awful story. It's a great game. I know you hate it for no reason but it's been 3 months already. Get over it.

I honestly don't really consider it a game. It's like one of those Goosebumps choose-your-own scare books for grown-ups plus visuals. More an interactive novel or movie.

lol i loved those goosebump books as a kid

Gaming can't be held to the same storytelling standards as other forms of entertainment. Why? Because while the narrative to a game can be important, its not the main raison d'être. Its a game first, and the story must fit around a game and not vice versa.

For the record, though, I have not played Heavy Rain. But, from what I've seen, if you look at it from the same standards as the best of movies and television, its very average when it comes to writing and performances. But almost every game is.

they wouldnt give that kinda story an oscar. if the game was squashed into a 2 hour movie then it would kinda suck...like pretty much ever other movie ever made

For my perspective a videogame is an actual form of art, you can measure the greatness of a game based on the gameplay and the artistic direction, not by the script, because if you have a great script but it is not well executed, you will have a terrible game, but if you have a great play mechanics that engages you to play throught the game multiple times combined with a well driven art direction you will get a great game

In fairness I think one of the most ridiculously praised stories thie generation was MGS4, it had a complete bat shit crazy plot yet people still praise it. I just put it down to my own opinions being vastly different to those people who rave about such games and certainly do not get offended or bothered by people who like to think stories in games are in some way a masterpiece.

At least you know the game must be good if people love it enough to hype anything and everything about it.

imo to call something art, first you have to define art.
that's pretty tricky

deciding whether something needs recognition for one or another of its aspects as notable is a much easier task. imo

That just means the narrative purpose is different. It doesn't mean we shouldn't call good writing or bad writing otherwise just because it's a game.

BTW, I'm actually pleased with this thread, because much of the discussion here is, well, discussion. Even for those of you who like the game, you're at least willing to discuss it, and (for the most part) not dismissing any criticism of it because it's not what you want to read.

Hmm, I now realize that's what offened me the most. It wasn't just holding the game up, but refusing to listen to any voice telling them the game's writing isn't that great.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

haha, I enjoyed it, but I don't think it deserved an oscar for best writing.
