Forums - Gaming Discussion - Developer says Used Games Sales worse then Piracy

If you going to use examples like used furniture, house or car which has wear and tear then what EA is doing is exactly the same. You can still buy and play a used game until you eyes fall out. You only have to pay to play online which a company doesn't have to give you. The same with buying a used car you may have to buy some tires or brakes right after you buy it. EA games as well as others clearly state that they can cut the online service without notice.

Notice EA is no stopping people from buying used games but they are rewarding those who support them with online service. That's sound fair to me.

I have been saying this forever. Used games are just as bad, and probably even worse, as piracy for the developers.

Both can also be solved if developers made games which were actually worth the money that is asked for their game, since currently about 90% of games are not.

Used game sales don't destroy game sales, they create console sales. How many consoles do you think people would buy if all the games cost 60 Freaking dollars?

Same can be said for piracy. I bed the PSP would have far fewer sales if games weren't pirateable.

Basically every industry can make the same stupid argument.

"Oh man! People are not buying new cars because they're buying used!!! We should add a chip to the engine that will make t he car useless after being sold to another person."

But hey, if you're losing that much revenue go blame Sony. Their goal of super incredible realistic graphis is killing your business, not the resale of your games that otherwise would have not been bought by a person that doesn't wanna spend $60 a game

Do people in this thread realize that video games are not even close to being the same as a car or other such physical goods?

How are they not the same thing? They are my property. I bought my games with my money to use for my pleasure and I will sell them when when that pleasure is gone just like I do with a car, house, or any piece of property.

The reason the used game market is killing developers is because

1. Recession.

2. They make games sp only with no free dlc or multiplayer.

3. The games that people want are no longer in production therefore used is the only way to go.

4. $60 for a game like Alan Wake? Fuck no! Maybe ME2 with free DLC and if the story was like 5 hours longer then thats a $60 value.

Considering that the last few years has seen record revenue in the videogame industry (probably one of the strongest industries during the recession), nothing can be said to be killing industry that is taking away from sales revenue. If you're riding on an all time sales high but still floundering, it's clearly the costs you've taken up as your business model that's the problem.

If you decide to follow a path that shoots your costs straight through the roof, you shouldn't expect your customers to change their habits to accommodate your choices and take up your losses.
