Oh, and regarding "whininess" (is that even a word?), there are ways to make a good "whiny" character, that way is:
1. Make sure his/her voice isn't annoying to tears.
2. Make sure he has an actual good reason to be whiny.

Good example - Vivi, in many pepole's opinion he's actually the best character in the series.
Bad Example - Hope, I wanted to stab him in the face most of the game, he's just such an idiot, how can you not want that character to die?

Because Hope only lost his mother, I mean mothers aren't important, a kid shouldn't be attached to his mum, how terrible! Lets add in he got turned into something his whole world had been telling him is the greatest evil of all.. Of course he shouldn't whine he should've said "oh well she's dead, time to move on", "oh well who cares if I'm a l'cie...I'm only 14 but I'll act like I'm 100 years old & pretend to be wise". /sarcasm

Hope was much stronger than I expected & a fantastic character, his development throughout the game was extremely well done. I have no complaints against him & Lightning showed her motherly skills!

So 1. Hope's voice wasn't annoying

2. He has more reason than any FF character ever to be whiny, considering his age he was in control pretty well.

Hope's development was great. The only problem with Hope was that he was way too philosophical and in control for his age! I mean, I know young kids come sometimes come out with some great and deep things sometimes, but with Hope, it was like he was the Archimedes of the world! He made the "adults" sound like idiots.

Right, because any generic brother and sister in such young age sacrificed themselves as stone statues for the rest of the group to save the world.... oh wait

Well, you'll have to try harder than that, since FF4 had one of the best FF stories and characters made so far. Oh and don't get me started about Vivi's backstory. Even Zidane and Kuja's backstory in Terra was better than Vivi's.

Right, that's the only thing that wasn't generic.

But the characters in FF4 have an unnatural obsession with sacrifice.

FF4's story was mediocre. The characters all had the personality of feet. Cecil was the only tolerable character in the game.

And did you even go to Quan's Dwelling in FF9? And seriously, you are an idiot if you think Zidane's backstory was better than Vivi's.

Of course, the story of mysidia and how it all fitted and spanned two universes and so many other FFs used for Tie-ins (Lufenia rings a bell?), the brother vendetta theme which has been pursued in other FFs since then. Oh and saving the world is all about sacrifice, at least that's more real than a bunch of unknown people that somehow manages to overcome the most powerful evil of all XD.

Also, I guess that Rydia's losing her entire village and having to grow up the summon land, learning all about the flow of life and the story of the world is shallow as well...oh snap

Seriously, do you have to resort to insults to prove your points? I knew it would go down like this, so that's why I pushed you xD

Oh, those are the main two themes of FF4?

I find it funny since they both go on for a total of two hours and this game is 30 hours long for the main story.

Rydia? She had the most personality, yeah. She was the best character (forgot about her). I'll give you that.

And dude, if you knew you were being an idiot and just did that to incite me, shut up.

...There's a big difference between losing your mom, and mourning her and your change in life, and getting all mega-hyper-emo and trying to kill Snow, also, for some reason that we don't know, Hope whines that his dad doesn't love him at all, of course the moment his dad sees him he shows his love and we don't understand WTF, also, when Lightning tries to save Serah in the beginning of the game, he shouts some stupid-ass shit about how someone shouldn't save a L'cie, while completely ignoring the fact that she's Lightning's sister |:

1. That's true, I wasn't refering to him.

2. Lol, what about FF4 Rydia? FF6 Terra and Celes? FF7 Cloud, and Vincent? FF9 Zidane, Kuja, Vivi, Garnett and Freya?

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

*SPOILERS*

Let's see... Hope's mother died...

Rydia, her entire village was slaughtered including her mother.

(Haven't played FF6)

Cloud, oh his family was killed, was used as a research specimen by Hojo, the same thing with Vincent.

Zidane wasn't a REAL person, had no family, and was only created to start war.

Kuja, same dealy-o with him.

Garnet lost two mothers, her entire kingdom was destroyed, and she wasn't really born on the Mist continent.

(Freya has nothing to complain about)

I agree. Hope has it the worst.

I believe that Hope is the perfect example of a so called "whiny" character done right. He had all the reason to be the way he was during almost the first half of the game.

Reason # 1: His mother died right in front of him because she got caught up in Snow's little "hero" game.

Reason # 2: He forcefully became a L'Cie because Lightning & friends decided to attack the Fal'Cie without thinking things through or minding those around them. Put on top of that of the fact that he had pretty much been taught his whole life that L'Cie are evil and are the "Enemies of Cocoon".

Reason # 3: He is dealing with all of this and he is only 14 years old. How else do you expect a 14 year old to act in that kind of situation?

Also, you people make it seem as if Hope was being whiny or emo throughout the entire game when in truth, he was only like that for less then half of the game (since his mindset changed during the end of chapter 7 and the half way point of FFXIII is chapter 10). During the entire second half of the game, Hope was always the one who encouraged the party when they were down. This is what you would call "character development", something Hope had plenty of.

lol dtewi

Hope didn't just have his mother die..

He was a l'cie or maybe you forgot, his life was finished. He was either gonna die as a cie'th or become a slave trapped inside a crystal. Its like being 14 & knowing you have cancer & your going to die in a few months.

Then as he ws a l'cie the whole of cocoon hated him, his OWN country despised him (remember palumpolum scenes with crowds)....thats a lot for a fourteen year old to bear

All because some ginger girl made him go into a vestige & a pink haired woman attacked a pulse fal'cie.

Its funny you don't mention Tidus from FFX who had it the 2nd worst imo.

Yes Hope definitely had it worst.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

@g-value

No, he doesn't have it worse.

Hope had far less to complain about, even with that stuff.

The characters I listed, they're sense of identity were stripped from them, and they realize they've been lving their entire life a lie.

At least with the l'Cie brand they could hide it like at Nautilus and still live normally. And don't give me the "Oh, I'll become a Cie'th" crap since they knew that when crystallized they'd wake up.

Look at Vivi, he had a lot more to complain about.

He was engineered, he realized that his life didn't mean anything on the cargo ship, he only had months to live, and his grandpa died.

Don't you think Vivi had it a LITTLE BIT worse?
