Forums - Gaming - 720p != 1080p

Well, while I think the 720p vs 1080p argument is substantial, and I agree that above 42 inches, 1080p is easily noticeable from a few feet away, I don't think there is a huge difference in image quality.

For instance, if I'm having screen tearing issues, or want to turn up my AA, I'd rather fix those problems and drop down to 720p. Unlike resolution settings, those other problems actually bother me during play, and are significant, got me?

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I can EASILY see the difference between 720p and 1080p at 37 inch screens and above. EASILY. My friend has a 37 inch 720p screen and I have a 37 inch 1080p screen and the XMB looks like utter crap on his screen after getting used to it on mine.

People that think there isn't a difference obviously haven't had the chance to compare them properly.

I agree with you , everything NATIVE 1080p is easily noticably different compared to 720p.............but not alot of things are native 1080p.

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!!!

Production cost is huge on 1080p due to more details.

Especially for movies, it pretty much showing all the flaws you wouldn't normally see in lower res.

Didn't the porn industry complain about their girls don't look as good in Full HD?

720p is just half HD.
But people calling it HD anyways to help sales TV and players.

720 is poor mans HD as my friend puts it.

I have a 22" 1080p tv and it looks much better than my friends 720p 19".

not really, there is no majorl benefit of 1080p for TVs below 32" so if you want to save yourself some cash when buying TVs below that size get a 720p till prices drop. Or wait till UHD and SUHD TVs come to market.

and how exactly a native 720p game will look better on a 1080P tv ? doesnt matter big or small tv set
it will still be 720p which means u wont get any more pixels on your huge 1080P tv, heck in fact u migh get a blurry picture which will make the game look like crap, even if it was well upscaled by the tv or the console again its a stretched picture with no more extra details! the only way to see a real difference is to have a native 1080p game running on at least 37inch 1080p Tv.

I am a proud GRAPHICS WHORE.

the most enoying thing is the lines between pixels... If I can see them, i have a hard time liking the image....

This , but i like to add i didn't compare anything but from playing Uncharted 2 and KZ2 i saw the difference easily.

Its not that people can't tell a difference, it is just that at certain distances people can't tell a difference.

If you watch your friend's 720p TV from 8' away and then watch yours from 8-10' away, you probably won't notice much difference at all.  I have a 47" which is the perfect size for a distance of 8-10' away to maximize the benefits of 1080p.

If a game engine was developed right it would scale correctly, of course the only devs now a days that make truly good engines are Valve, Crytek, DICE, and Epic Games. A 720p game shouldnt have any variably noticable issues till its placed on a TV above 40". Now I do still recommend 32" and below for anything 720p. In the end its all about the ability to scale an image to the correct size without any major graphical glitches. Any PC has the ability to, the consoles should be able to easily do it.

But of course the input feeds for TVs are trash so image bandwidth doesnt equal out with the power of the systems at hand anyways. This is a different issue revolving around TVs. Why couldnt TV manufacturers just put in DVI or DisplayPort connections instead of HDMI? HDMI 1.4 is the only way the cables will ever have the input bandwidth to present 1080p content in their actual glory.
