This , but i like to add i didn't compare anything but from playing Uncharted 2 and KZ2 i saw the difference easily.

Its not that people can't tell a difference, it is just that at certain distances people can't tell a difference.

If you watch your friend's 720p TV from 8' away and then watch yours from 8-10' away, you probably won't notice much difference at all.  I have a 47" which is the perfect size for a distance of 8-10' away to maximize the benefits of 1080p.
