Forums - Nintendo - Have the Wii's graphic limits caused it to have more "evergreen" titles?

Graphics have been "good enough" for the majority of consumers for a long time. The PS2 blew the XBox and the GameCube out of the water, and both those systems had much better graphics. Any PS2/XB multiplat looked better on the XB, and any PS2/GC multiplat looked better on the GC. The butt-ugly graphics never hurt the Grand Theft Auto games.

So I agree. Photorealism is only cutting-edge for a month anyway.

my favorite gen graphically was 16 bit.

now it could use HD graphics and more colors, but i'm fine with games like castel crashers.... at least the art style has an effect.. you don't see the same faces that you already had been seeing on PC since they started doing CGI with 3D models...

But, isn't CoD an evergreen on HD consoles?

I think being evergreen as to do with the game and not the platform itself honestly.

Solitaire its an evergreen in any PC.

^many of those games are on HD console, they are not only superior in graphics, have more gameplay options and online multiplayer.

you are limiting yourself if you think it's just "graphics".

Wii games have more gameplay options.

Ex: Mario Kart Wii (Wiimote+WiiWheel - Wiimote - Wiimote+Nunchuck - Classic Controller - GameCube Controller)

Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition (Wiimote+Nunchuk - Classic Controller)

Ex: Metroid Prime 3 Corruption, Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, Silent Hill Shatterd Memories have a pointer that makes a great gameplay. (to me, has better gameplay than the traditional pad)

Ex: Metroid Other M (you can change from third person view to first person view at any time)

Ex: Zelda Wii, Red Steel 2 (Wii Motion Plus)

Ex: New Super Mario Bros Wii (hold the same Wiimote sideways and play like the NES era)

And, I have played Mario Kart Wii online and I never see lag.

Also put the fact that HD consoles have worse controls than wii

I have to say, Resident Evil 4 Wii edition is the best Resident Evil to date. I gotta give it to the superior control scheme..

When I played RE5 I was like WTF, it doesn't feel right because I got spoiled after playing RE4 and expected something more fluid.

Resident evil 5, plus Wii controller on a HD console= mind blowing.

Has the PCs graphics unlimitations caused it to have more "evergreen" titles? I see no connection with graphics performance personally if two different platforms with completely different performance characteristics can share this same trait.

Tease.

I think that's true to some degree because graphical limitations is one of the reasons why the Wii's third-party support is so poor compared to the PS3/360. So while the PS3 and 360 get a steady stream of AAA third-party games month after month (so there's constant competition and the old being replaced by the new), the Wii only really has Nintendo's first party games, so they continue selling months and years after release basically because there's nothing else.

It should perhaps also be noted that (with the exception of New Super Mario Bros. Wii it seems) all of the Wii's "evergreen" games (Play, Fit, Fit Plus, Sports Resort, Mario Kart) are bundled with something. I'm sure that contributes to their evergreen-ness.

Call of Duty is an everygreen FRANCHISE.  However, they come out with a new Call of Duty every year, and then old version eventually stops selling and stops being played.  In the case of Mario Kart or Super Mario on the Wii, there is no indication of a sequel to these ever coming out, so these titles seem to keep up in sales.  And they look good enough later in the Wii's life cycle as they have earlier.

Nice theory. I think that has something to do with it. But I'd also add that the actual content of these games is what keeps them selling. As well as positive word of mouth, which imo has always been the best and most effective form of marketing there is.

I mean, if you look at the titles that are of ever green status or hitting the 10m+ mark: Kart, WSR, NSMB, Wii Fits, Brawl (soon) there are A LOT of content in these games. The selling point for these games aren't their graphics it is in the content.

Also people like ot say Nintendo milks franchises but, rarely do you see more than 2 iterations of a franchise in a gen. More often its just one game per gen (Brawl, Kart etc) Where as other companies pop out franchises yearly (GH,COD,Madden etc)

It also has to do with the console itself which sells like an evergreen title. During historically slow months Wii continues to sell at a brisk pace. When you are selling that many systems you are bound to sell large amounts of software as well.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Don't have time to read through the whole thread but here's my two cents:

It's not the lack of HD graphics that lead to Nintendo's evergreens, rather it's Nintendo's pursuit of producing evergreen titles that lead to the Wii's SD graphics.

Nintendo isn't interested in falling into the 'incrementally better' sequalitise that everyone else engages in. They normally don't produce more than one of a series per generation, except Zelda and Pokemon which definately do suffer from incrementally better syndrome. Interestingly Nintendo is looking to do something different with the Wii Zelda, perhaps trying to move it into more evergreen territory.
