Does anyone know? I remember see an article here about ff7 selling over a million copies on the psn (1st week) so I'm wondering if the psn is profitable for sony.

Well its free... and it does eat up a ton of bandwidth with all the free services and activities on top of all the stuff they sell. I have no clue if it is profitable or not, but I'd be more inclined to say not.
You must consider the influence that the PSN has on consumers, would you buy a console that had no online in this day and age? Financially it would be a complete howler if they had not included an online capability, in this respect its inclusion HAS made them money by keeping the product competitive, It may not be cash in hand, but that is not what matters.

That's also not what he's asking. Just because they include an online service doesn't mean they had to make it free. That was their choice and I'm sure it is hurting them quite a bit financially.
As far as pure profit after all PSN costs, what do you think is the outcome?
It depends on Home. I've heard Home does quite a bit of income from both advertisement revenue and purchases made by gamers for things that don't exist...
Plus they make money hosting demos and games. Every developer pays to have their content on PSN. Who knows though?
It really depends who is doing the storage too. If they had to create an entire server system, then they are probably still paying off the bills..

I would imagine Sony makes money back on all the downloads, otherwise, I don't think they would have kept it free this long.
Oh common, does anyone here actually have any idea what it costs to run servers at the backbone line? It's super cheap, bandwith doesn't matter one bit when you are running server hosting. Me and my friend are running 3 rack servers for a laughable cash, without bandwith limitations on 100 GB european backbone line. We use them just for hosting and running our own projects, but even then we turn profit just from the hosting 4:1.
PSN is a goldmine for Sony, there is NO WAY in HELL that they are losing single cent.
MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

Seems like you know what your talking about, thanks for the answer. I figured they had to be making something to keep it free this long.
