High court accepts case over violent video games

A free speech dispute over a California law banning sale of violent video games to children will go to the Supreme Court for review.  The justices Monday accepted the state's appeal and will decide whether the law is too restrictive in denying access by minors to often-graphic material. Video-game makers say the ban goes too far. They say the existing nationwide, industry-imposed, voluntary ratings system is an adequate screen for parents to judge the appropriateness of computer games.

Interesting to see how this plays out.

I don't see them winning.

I mean, we ban kids from stuff all the time. Like porn.

Besides both republicans and democrats are against videogames at current.

The industry is voluntarily regulated and stores like Wal-Mart, GameStop, etc. I believe ask people suspected of being under 17 for ID when they buy M-rated games. They won't even put out "Adult Only 18+" video games in stores ffs. What more does this nanny state government want? So as long as parents buy their kids Halo, Gears, God of War, etc., they are going to continue playing the games (and for the record, I don't see any problem with parents buying these games for their children. That's their decision. Violent video games do not influence children to be criminals. Eric Harris, Columbine Shooter, may have played a lot of Doom. But the dude was a psychopath. He already had a predisposition to anti-social behaviour and would have killed those people even if Doom never existed. Violent video games may attract psychopaths/sociopaths. But they don't make people into psychopaths/sociopaths. Guys like the Columbine shooters and Cho were born with those traits. And it was the years of bullying combined with that predisposition to anti-social behaviour that brought them over the edge.)

Perhaps things will be more favorable when our generation of gamers become politicians.

QFT. My mom bought me all kinds of violent games up until I was old enough to to get a job and buy them on my own (15) and I haven't killed anyone yet........I think. Granted, when I black out sometimes, I find myself in the weirdest places.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

This is ridiculous.

Why do people enjoy telling other people what not to do so much?

More favourable yes... more favourable towards kids getting videogames... I doubt it.  Hasn't really helped the movie Industry which needs self regulators.

People like to say that we are born with inalienable rights... in reality it seems as if we don't have those rights until we turn 18.

Even then we just barely have them.  On the other hand, most people are idiots and because of them we all need to be regulated.

I disagree.  I think, if most people are idiots... we should allow them free reign to be idiots.  If someone wants to screw up their own lives, it's their buisness as far as I'm concerned.
