Forums - PC Discussion - Floppy Disk discontinued after 30 Years

The days of the 3.5-inch floppy disk are now officially numbered.

Sony, which boasts 70 percent of the anemic market, announced Friday that it would end Japanese sales of the ancient storage medium in March 2011, according to a report in the Mainichi Daily newspaper.

The 3.5-inch floppy was a ubiquitous and necessary component for storing and transferring files between personal computers for nearly three decades. Sony pioneered the 3.5-inch floppy disk in 1981, eventually replacing the 5.25-inch floppy disk that had previously been the popular storage format.

However, as the size of files and programs grew, the floppy disk was pushed aside by inexpensive and larger-format storage medium. Thanks to the creation of storage methods such as CDs, DVDs, Zip, and USB drives, Sony saw its Japanese sales of floppies decline from a record 47 million disks in fiscal 2002 to 12 million in fiscal 2009.

Most other floppy disk manufacturers had long since pulled out of the market, and Sony itself has already ceased sales to most of its overseas markets.

Certainly the writing had been on the walls for years. With the release of the iMac in 1998, Apple was the first computer maker to take the plunge and eliminate the floppy completely. Dell followed suit in 2003 when itdropped the floppy as standard equipment on one of its Dimension desktops.

Updated at 4:50 p.m.: to clarify sales figures are for Japan.

The best thing about floppy disks was its compactness and ease of use (much easier to copy a file to a floppy disk than to burn a CD).

The worst thing was the unreliability... How often did you copy a file to multiple floppy disks just to make sure that you'd be able to read the file somewhere else?

Still, not that many years ago I still used floppy disks once in a while (mostly as a recovery boot method, or to play some ancient games in a native DOS environment).

PS: I consider the true replacement for floppy disks to be the USB drive/pen drive, not CDs.

Poor floppy disks, rest in peace.

Wow. I had no idea Apple led the charge on Floppy rejection. I agree with NJ5 though, It's USB Flash Drives that have taken over from Floppies.

hehe, floppy rejection...

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Holy crap they still make them?

I barely used them at all given our first home PC was in 2001/2

Good riddance to floppy disks. Very unreliable pieces of garbage.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

A sad day indeed.

Wait, why are people still using floppy's in 2010 in the first place?

Blaspheme.... it's a perfectly viable way to store a digital photo.

Actually I used my floppy drive couple of months ago to update my bios. Sad day indeed =/
