I felt both games were excellent; that (with Xenogears and Ocarina) they represented the height of video games. Final Fantasy 8 draws me more than 7 mostly because there is more substance to it. The towns were all places I either wanted to live or pay a long visit to. There was also a lot more to do in 8, and the system of powering up characters offered multiple options to proceed (and you could use all if you wanted). 8 also offered the ability to transfer power and skills among characters, and even turn random battles off; you could power up by other means than collecting items from monsters - like the card game. It is a joy to play both games.
To this date though, I think the love story between Laguna and Raine touches me the most of any love story in any game - and there was something about the Laguna/Julia story that I found appealing as well. How it all translated down to the younger generation. Ellone was also a great character. Where FF8 succeded for me with characters was how side characters that had lower amounts of stage time managed to have such a large presence through the game - a lot of aspects which were related to those characters were seen by the younger generation or the player (Julia's piano theme for instance; or Laguna's memory to some villagers in a hidden away place, etc...). Probably the best multithreaded plot ever done in a videogame.
For the guy that called Squall emo; let me guess, you were big into Linkin Park, Radiohead, and punk music; and spent a great deal of time sulking about how hard your suburban life was with your jaded and disapointed parents? Thought so. The people I see complaining the most about things being emo with the slightest sign of an abnormal hair style are the people who were sulking emo kids - or similar people, themselves. These people lash out so harshly now because they are embarassed about anything that reminds them of how pathetic they think they just use to be. Totally unable to appreciate some of the best art the videogame world has to offer.
