You know, on fifa 10 the keeper jumps everytime he has to catch a ball... and some times the players jump to avoid slide tackles.... good platformer right there

Seriously, in Super Mario Kart on tracks like Bowser Castle 1, you can save time by jumping over the ramps and the gap behind them. That's some tricky platforming. |

As a gamer since the SNES days, I'd like to say that the platforming genre has been consistently defined by 4 titles:
Mario - Nintendo
Mega Man - Capcom
Castlevania - Konami
Sonic - Sega
I've yet to see any other definitive faces in the genre as of late. There's just something about these classics that really make them king. Simplicity and design perhaps?

I agree he should clarify, but there'd be two problems if that's what he meant: 1. Capcom has not been slacking for platformers this gen, surprisingly 2. Naming the top two instead of, like, ranking the two five or something implies that the top two are kind of equivalent. Until he clarifies, though, I will let it lie as per your example. |
Here is the problem though. Even if OP doesn't clarify, CGI is arguing that Sony is a clear cut #2 platformer producer while others sare saying Sony is nowhere near #2 since Capcom/Sega/Rare is better.
MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

I don't see a Sony franchise on that list. It looks like Nintendo, Capcom, Sega, and Nintendo/Rare to me. If you think Sony's platformers are on par with Nintendo's, I must ask what your favorite 2-D platformers and 3-D paltformers that they developed are. They didn't develop LittleBigPlanet. |

The problem I see is that most of our games today have several mixed genres making older genres like the Platformer, and RPG more obscured with its definition.
eh Nintendo Is The BEST i dont know about Sony.
Atto Suggests...:
Book - Malazan Book of the Fallen series
Game - Metro Last Light
TV - Deadwood
Music - Forest Swords
whoever said Uncharted and Infamous are platformers need to really edit out those posts.... very embarrassing
- Wasteland - The Mission.
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is a platformer.
It said so right on the box with the main character standing on a platform holding his sword.
3rd or 4th overall? How many platformers have you played? lol.
I'd put but at least Capcom, Sega, Konami, Namco, Hudson, Tecmo, Taito and Treasure ahead of them. Probably more if I really thought about it, there were tons of companies producing amazing platformers in the 8/16bit days. Hell, I'd even say Sony's beast platformer came from then (SkyBlazer).
I'd also say Capcom is 2nd this gen, no question. Thing is, all their good stuff is on the download services (MM9/10, BC ReArmed) or handhelds (UGNG, MM/X remakes, ZX/Advent).
