Have we agreed that Link was an independent actor in the game apart from the pro-town side? His role in the OP doesn't say anything about winning with the town or even wanting to lynch subspace army.
I think Link is a balancer. If there were 3 mafia, then Ganondorf is good but Link is out to get him. If there were 4 mafia, then Ganondorf is bad but Link is out to get him. Either way it shaves off the advantage of the side of the team he's on.
The case for 3 mafia: 13 people total. The supposed Golden Rule is 3 town to 1 mafia. 3 + 9 = 12, so it's 3 and 9 with Link on his own mini-faction going after Ganondorf.
The case for 4 mafia: What if they don't have powers while all the townies do? That would justify what would be otherwise an oversized mafia. But no, this doesn't make sense because we're sure one of trangent and SM128 [edit: SFB] is bad and has powers.
