I prefer the gameplay of Bayonetta (interesting combos, dodging, etc) so I would rate Bayonetta the best hack n slash. The GoW series has a better story.

Diablo 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. I also really enjoyed Torchlight. However, I consider Diablo2 / Torchlight an action rpg. Almost all of my builds were ranged damage dealers in both.

I usually don't enjoy Hack'n'Slashes. So I was very surprised when I found the fighting part in Batman: Arkham Asylum to be everything I always wanted those games to be. Cool. Fast. Brutal. Fun. Making me feel badass.

I know, not really the right genre. Still the best Hack'n'slash I ever played.
