Foresight indeed. Blu-ray (and now 3D) was an inevitable step that Sony would have had to take in this gen or the next in order to stay ahead of the competition, despite the cost. That foresight allowed Sony to see where the multimedia entertaiment was headed and it allowed them to capitalize from it. They may or may not be doing so now, but they definitely will, in the latter part of the PS3's lifecycle and with the PS4. MS will also have to make a similar jump at some point, because pre-rendered cinematics will still be around regardless of what you expect. If they go the Blu-ray route, it's royalties (win) to Sony. And digital distribution would see their next iteration go the way of the PSP Go. Internet speeds are simply not up to the task at the moment, and won't be for at least a decade. MS will eventually land at a crossroads, and what will they do? Bow to the competition or stick with "old" tech?
Like you said, this generation OR THE NEXT. Sony jumped the gun, and it cost them billions. Guess what? Everyone everywhere knew that eventually a new method of storage would be needed for games. Noone questioned that. MS and Nintendo had the foresight to say "we don't need to lose billions here, new storage can wait for next gen." Meanwhile, Sony's "foresight" lead to factories being closed and 16,000+ layoffs. They didn't "capitalize" from this. They lost. Big time. And you realize that Sony is only one of many companies with a stake in bluray, right? It's going to take an age for the PS3 investment to pay off. As for the crossroads, MS is in it's 5th year of the 360, and DVDs are still just fine. They don't need to "bow", they're free to ride out this generation, and upgrade in the next.
I highly doubt Sony will be introducing a new format with the PS4. The associated costs would be far too great, not to mention Blu-ray will still be in its infancy stage. All that will be focused on are the graphics card and the processor. The PS3 behind the 360? I think you're speaking too soon here, this gen is far from over. If anything, the PS2 should exhibit the rigidity that Sony has when it comes to keeping its products in the market. Its floppy disk support is a good example of this too (sadly, one that will soon come to an end). I'm curious to see if MS deals with this differently, this time around.
I'm not saying the PS3 will remain behind the 360, merely that it has spend 3 1/2 years playing catch-up, and it's only now making it past it's starting gap.
Noone cares about the Move? How did you come to know of this? I ask the same about your opinion, that Natal is going to move more consoles than the Move? Guesswork has no place in such a discussion.
I'm sorry, I assumed you frequented game sites. The Hype surrounding Natal is huge (unlike the move). The number of developers working on projects for Natal far outshines the Move. Natal is a bold new direction, whereas the move is basically a PS3mote. And MS is, and will continue to, put way more marketting power behind Natal than the PS3 with Move. All signs point to Natal having a much larger impact.

The 360 is not going to give up without a fight and Microsoft has a few more tricks up its sleeve. 360 Slim, Halo:Reach, Gears of War 3, Project:Natal and Milo. More price cuts and possible revision of the XBox 360 with a system upgrade. |
Doubters? What am I doubting?
"360 slim"? ... Please, new PS3 slim.
Another one? What?
"Halo: Reach"? ... C'mon, GT5.
I can't wait until Reach blows GT5's sales out of the water, so we can stop hearing this.
"Gears of war 3"? ... Killzone 3!
Huh? When KZ3 releases, the entire killzone franchise combined will finally have a shot at outselling a single GoW game. But they're not in the same category, not by a long shot.
"Project: Natal"? ... MOVE out of the way.
Wow. You think move is going to be anywhere as near as big as Natal? Do you also think Oreo's are bowing to the competition from Hydrox?
"Milo"? ... The what now?
Pedophiles are an untapped market!
"More price cuts"? ... More price cuts!
Fair enough. Sony has more wiggle room in price dropping. However, MS made more profit in the last year, on just Windows 7 sales, than Sony's entire business will this year. So price cuts are always an option.
"Possible revision of the 360 with a system upgrade"? I just hope they won't be taking any other features away.
Huh? What makes you think they would? Sony's the only one to be setting that precedent this gen.
Oh and ... ditto for the PS3.
