Forums - Sony - Uncharted 2 “the perfect example” of storytelling, says Crysis 2 writer

I definately enjoyed the gameplay of Uncharted 2 more. However the story lost me in the first scene. It was worse than a comic book in the sense that at least Superman has kryptonite to explain why the man of steel can take a hundred bullets without breaking a sweat but can still get badly hurt. The first scene had an otherwise impervious Drake striken with a bullet wound. The game therefore lost me in the first scene and it didn't matter how good/bad the story was it was simply a eyeroll fest to me. The fact that the game was more visually striking made this worse because I expected Nathan Drake to react in a more realistic fashion.

If you wanted a good example of a game which I felt had a good story? Planescape Torment. Ultima 8 was pretty awesome too. Uncharted 2? Not so much.

Edit: @mibuokami Im currently playing Planescape torment as I found a version compatible with the 64 bit version of Windows 7. Im pretty well into it.

How's your impression so far? The game had a lot of bug but I found the story was just so amazing. The amount of character development really made the game special for me.

Its really good. The re-release version thus far has been bug free. Although I wish they had made it render at a higher resolution!

My impression is that the game is excellent bar none. In terms of delivering a text based storyline I have seen nothing better. The opening scene with the scribe was truely fantastic and the more I thought about it the more I was truely blown away by the implications of what I had read and the meaning behind the words.

btw he doesnt say it is a perfect example of storytelling

he says it is a perfect example of how to wield a really good narrative within a cool game.

perfect storytelling and good narrative with a gaming environ are two very different things.

good old gaming journalists and their artistic license again...

This guy just can't say anything without it needing to be twisted some way!

Sensationalism at its best...

This guy is trying to put the hype at an insane level ala peter molyneux
prepare yourself to be disapoint

AND, does this guy know Crysis1 had poor story/writing/setting and blank gameplay ?

I mean : this game was only saved because it was a technical monster and was badass because you could kill "tree" (not joking !)

@ bolded

Yes, as do the developers. It's the reason he's writing Crysis 2 in the first place.

Perfect example of story telling in games =/= perfect story telling.

Best story delivery mechanism = Books. Ergo perfect story telling in an absolute sense is only possibly via books.

2nd best = live theatre (as long as it's not a musical, IMO)

3rd best = movies / TV (as long as it's not a musical, IMO)

4th best = video games

So, Uncharted 2 (according to Capt. Morgan) is the perfect example of story telling in one of the worst mediums for story telling. That's like winning a gold medal at the special Olympics.

With compliments like that, who needs insults?

The thread title is misleading, you should read the actual quote.

“There is absolutely no reason why you can’t weld a really good narrative to a really cool shooting game,” Morgan told NowGamer.

“Uncharted 2 is the perfect example…it’s tongue-in-cheek, but it’s a compelling story and it’s a very straight-forward gameplay dynamic.

Everything this man says just has to be twisted by some of the so-called journalists we have here in the industry, none of the recent headlines regarding what he has said have been true to the actual quote, twisting his words for sensationalism.

EDIT: Correction, his MW2 comments were rather truthfully depicted I think, but that's it.

Uncharted 2 is perfect. Also story-wise

And the relevance to what you've bolded is?

And where do games like MGS4 fit on that list? Cause I really can't picture it as a book, a live theater or a movie (well actually I can on the last one but it would be bs)

Imo, games as an interactive experiences can be even better than movies or books. Even tho I haven't played Heavy Rain, I can't really tell if you bound with the characters or not, but it looks like a good example of what I'm trying to say.
