Definately the best gen....as for 16 bit being "Golden Age" the linked article can quite frankly shove it up its Arse !

16 bit was not Golden in any way.... in many respects the games industry was on its knees after the Great Crash !

Terrible gameplay with graphics and sound that merely served to paper over the cracks ruled the 16 bit era.

There were of course the odd shining gems but the 16 bit era is best seen as a transition phase rather than any hue of precious metal.

CLEARLY you didn't live through those games your oldest console is probably a ps2 or an xbox anybody who has played the games from the 16-bit era knows these are some of the best games every created judgeing them by graphics and sound is something only a person from the last or current generation would do.

Super mario world, sonic the hedgehog, chrono trigger, final fantasy 6,donkey kong country, super metroid, castlevania IV, and those are only some of the popular games. You really need to own a super nintendo genesis or a turbografx 16 to really experience all the great games.

Heck of a shaky hypothesis there NinjaV.

I did indeed live through the 16 bit era and the 8 bit era.

Come to think of it I was playing Defender in the Arcades in the early 80's and was good enough to draw a large crowd.

I guess perspective is everything but as one of the few gamers to have experienced every gen I still maintain that the 16 bit gen is not "Golden"

If anything the Golden age should really belong to the original arcade games (Asteroids, Pole Position, Pac Man) or the Atari 2600 years.

These games were vanguard, they changed the public perception of what computers could be used for. They ultimately gave you your beloved 16 bit consoles.

If you are going to say that, then you might as well say the abbacus was the golden age, as if it were not for it, we would not have computers today and thus no acrade game and thus not 16-bit. Saying that just becasue one superseeds another does not make it Golden in lieu of it's kin.

I will grant you that the arcade scene was what first made gaming popular.

XBox exclusives are mostly fps's. But Nintendo and Sony have much more variety.

Viva Pinata, Viva Pinata Trouble In Paradise, Forza 2 & 3, PGR 3 & 4, Banjo Kazooie N&B, Blue Dragon, Fable II, Gears 1 & 2 (Third Person Shooter), Halo Wars, Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect 1 & 2, Ninja Blade, Race Pro, Scene It 1 & 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, Alan Wake, Dead Rising, Crackdown.

Thats just a start but there is loads of others too that aren't FPS.  I'm guessing you don't have a 360 so you have no idea of how varied the software is, its just easy to copy every other troll and call it the shooter box.

I don't think that anyone denies that the Xbox360 has games other then shooters. But the major question is, which games are really successful on the 360 that are not shooters.

To give a PS2 analogue, there is Katamari, Ico and for the PS3 there is LBP, Ratchet and clank and GoW3.

I just can't think of any really successful 360 games that are not shooters, other then FFXIII or Forza.

I can list at least 10, some are listed in the quote I gave you.  Since when did a game have to sell x amount to be considered whether it exists for the purposes of a debate.  My point is quite clear that he said most 360 exclusives are FPS's, that is a lie, he is wrong, there really is no debate regarding that fact.

If you want to get on the variety fact and what sells then in all honesty I wouldn't be a poster child for the PS3's variety of sales as its got its fair share of problems shifting software other than the traditional hardcore market.  If you say Nintendo have more variety there is a huge amount of gamers not being serviced or happy with what Nintendo is providing on the Wii too.  The PS3 doesn't have anywhere near the variety of the PS2 and never will as its been marketed to a older crowd, pure and simple.

I did not at all say that a game has to sell X amount to be considered whether it exists or not. As I already stated, no one denies that Xbox360 has variety. I simply believe that most people will argue that the games of different varieties are no where near as successful as the shooter genre.

You do not see the same thing when it comes to PS3, Wii, PS3, or any other console to even close to the same degree as you see it on the Xbox360. This is why the Xbox360 has been pegged as the shooter box. It just does not have a sizeable list of non shooter games that have been succesful.

I also never said that the PS3 nor Wii had a great amount of successful variety either. The Wii is famous for mini-game games and prime nintendo franchises. The PS3 is known for Blu-Ray more then any one genre. Each conosle has thier niche.

Finally, for all the xbox exclusives that come to mind that are really successful and not shooter games, I can still only think of Forza. Fable, and maybe Mass Effect, but that is kind of a rpg/shooter.

I will say again, most successfull games on the Xbox 360 (a system is generally known by it successfull games and not it's semi-successful games) are in the vast majorty shooters of one type or another. The same cannot be said for either of the 2 current gen systems.

What are these generations you console gaming peasants speak of? :P

Seriously though, 32-bit was the best for me. 3D (perspective) games had only just started really taking off so devs were figuring out so many new play styles. The roots of nearly all modern games can be found back there. Otherwise, this is my 2nd fave gen.

@ thelifatree

Deus Ex 2 was ported to PC from X-box, hence the poor textures and small areas.

Yeah I kinda figured... after I wrote that. Because it doesn't look much better than the first one. It wasn't as good as the first. But I still loved.

Thats sort of my point.

In all other spheres the "Golden" age is the first one that enters the popular conciousness. Comics, Cars, Airflight. I dont see why video games is so special a genre it should buck the established trend.

I think you 2 pals just have different definitions of one word.

Like cars that were made when they first came in. Are not better than the new cars. You can argue Appearance. But they were smaller, slower, less efficient, more dangerous. Hell some had wooden wheels. And they didn't have seatbelts.

Now my grandpa has a model T, It's awesome fun to be in but it's a novelty item

Is this what you are comparing the 16 bit era to? You make it sound way worse, than I would have :)

btw, I'm just twisting your words... I like everything, jus' wanted devil advocate fun.

I entered the debate disagreeing with a guy who said 360 exclusives are mostly FPS's, he was wrong.  You then quoted me and tried to make out I said something in error, which I didn't.

It doesn't matter how successful the different varieties are, they're available on the console so my point that there is variety is more than justified.  I'm not arguing perceptions with you, there is no point as its purely subjective, the facts of the matter is that most 360 exclusives are NOT FPS games, it really isn't such a hard concept to grasp and its concrete fact not opinions.
