I think you 2 pals just have different definitions of one word.
Like cars that were made when they first came in. Are not better than the new cars. You can argue Appearance. But they were smaller, slower, less efficient, more dangerous. Hell some had wooden wheels. And they didn't have seatbelts.
Now my grandpa has a model T, It's awesome fun to be in but it's a novelty item
Is this what you are comparing the 16 bit era to? You make it sound way worse, than I would have :)
