So I'm looking at the SONY Vaio Z Series, are these specs good?

Configured
Intel CoreTM i5 Processor
Genuine Windows® 7 Professional
Black
320 GB Serial ATA (5400 rpm)
4 GB 1066MHz DDR3-SDRAM
No DVD disc drive
33.3 cm LCD, 1600x900 + webcam
No Wireless WAN
________

Will I need Wireless WAN to be able to play online?!!

I tried to look up the speed of the i5 processor, but i5 is a series of processors so I couldn't find the exact speed of the processor in the laptop that you are considering.

Those specs doesn't really say anything about the graphics card and graphics memory, wich is concerning. If a company doesn't do that it's usually because the graphics card is weak or uses shared memory.

You always want to avoid shared graphics memory because it affects the performance of the computer negatively.

If you do find the clock speed of the processor, anything above or close to 2.5 GHz is good.

What's the graphics card? Plus, there isn't even a dvd drive I mean what the...? Also what is the speed of the i5 processor (the one in MHz or GHz)?

Are never mind, no DVD drive = no buy.

hmm

Is this one good?

It seems to have an OK processor, and according to notebookcheck, the grapchics card should run crysis at low detail.

I'd say it should also be able to run the SC2 beta at low detail even though the minimum official requirements for that is a 2.5 GHz CPU.

If it has the features that you want and has a good price, I'd say it's fairly balanced. Although a little lacking in power.

Also, it didn't say if the graphics memory is shared or not wich is a concern. Dedicated graphics memory is always something worth looking for.

@Kung Kras

cool thanks, that one is roughly around the low end of my budget, so I can afford something more.

Can you reccomend a good 2.5 + GHZ laptop?

@Ssenkahdavic

The ones you posted are good

but they seem to have a 1.6 GHZ processor, thats no enough for Mass Effect 2 according to specs :(

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

If you want a laptop that will last you five years, be prepared to go awhile without being able to play demanding PC games. Laptops are just not very good for high-end gaming.

If you absolutely want to play high-end PC games, your best bet is to buy a reliable, portable and inexpensive laptop and then build a gaming rig desktop for yourself rather than spend a fortune on a Alienware laptop that will become out-of-date in no time.

@darth, I have always loved Asus, the quality of their motherboards are good and they are usually good performers (my pc is from Asus so I know lol) so I looked at the site you showed me and I think you might check one of these (all gaming labtops close to the high range of your budget). I didn't pick one bec I didnt know what design you'll like.

I'd double check, but the i7 processors he listed are almost certainly Quad Cores that would also have turbo boost.

In other words, they are substantially more powerful than the 2.5GHZ DUAL cores being listed, and would easily run ME2.

Exactly.  They will run the game without any issue (besides the usual loadscreen issue on the ship but that is more of a quad core cpu issue)

1) with i7 720qm if only 2 cores are active it will run at a max clock speed of 2.398 GHz, while in i5 540m when 2 cores are active its running at 2.53 GHz

2) with i7 fully turboboosted and hyperthreaded at 4 cores, it is running at a max of 2.8 GHz, while a similar full automation of i5 540m gives it a clock speed of 3.06 GHz.

3) The i7 is the better gaming chip.  The extra L2C will make up for the lack of a few MHz.

And Darth.  Think about upgrading to a SSD (you can always buy a cheap enclosure for the HDD that comes with the machine for extra storage).  Im running one in both my laptop and my desktop as primary and they are amazing.  The biggest bottleneck you will have is the HDD, so going with a nice fast one is always a good idea.

I kind of like this one, although I can't confirm if it's priced well or is able to play ME2. Can someone plz tell if it's good or not and why?

@starcraft

ohhhhh sorry I had no idea i7 & i5 made so much difference lol

so the asus one looks good

Apparently the Nvidia Geforece 3300M Care can only play 58% of the games released in the last 12 months, otherwise this laptop would have been perfect

I'll check the asus one again on the system spec site!

@sabestar

thanks for that link, the site looks very helpful!

4 gig Max.  While not a HUGE problem, Id always prefer the option of more RAM especially when you are going to game.
