Forums - Sales - How Sony could have destroyed the 360 and remained profitable

If Sony never made the PS3 there would be 70 million 360's out there.

This is what I feel too. If the PS3 did not existed, the 360 sales will be slightly lesser than the combined sales of PS3 and 360.

Thirded. If gamers are offered a console which can have far better graphics, AI etc, whilst giving easy online play (built in online), bigger HDD's, they're going to take it. Better hardware allows for the potential of better gameplay.

slowmo, is the PS3 GPU one of the reasons most multiplatform games end up looking better on the 360?

The short answer is yes.

Long answer is quite complex and it'll end up with pages of off topic talk but I'll try for you.  The 360 architecture design is still very similar to that of a PC which makes development quite simple.  The PS3 architecture is different because a large amount of its power is contained within the Cell and not the GPU.  Most game engines are built with the PC style balanced architecture in mind so they put the graphics load on the GPU and all other threads such as AI, physics, etc are handled by the CPU.  The problem with this method is on the PS3 you end up with a CPU that isn't being taxed at all and a GPU that is getting bogged down because it cannot process as fast as the 360 or PC versions.  This ends up with sacrifices being made usually to get the PS3 version "good enough" (as happened to the 360 version of FFXIII).

Instead of rewriting game engines to offset graphical work to the SPE's (very costly), most developers save their budgets and compromise the quality of the PS3 version.  Easy ways to increase performance are to drop resolution, reduce texture quality (saves memory bandwidth), reduce AA quality (or disbale it), remove some effects.

As I said its quite a complex answer to such a simple question and I could probably write pages upon the subject.  If you look at the PS3 exclusives we know the hardware is at least as good, probably more powerful than the 360 as a whole.  If we look at multiplatform games then in general the 360 looks the stronger machine.  Having the 360 as  lead platform usually ends up with the 360 looking noticably better, when the PS3 is lead they look identical or the PS3 marginally better (FFXIII is the big exception here).  I don't like the term lazy devs people use on here as it doesn't take into consideration why developers do not have the tools to improve the PS3 developments.

they don't have the tools because they're  lazy, look at Crytech approach to the ps3 and Valve's you'll see what I mean. however everything else was spot on.

NO ALL PS3 GAMES LOOK BEETER THEN ALL 360 GAMES.

ok don't wanna be a grammer nazi but I'm sure you meant not and not no lol. and in which case is true, not all ps3 games  look better than anything on 360, there's really only a few that are visually and technically better than anything 360, but the point is all those that are, are ps3 exclusives, no multiplat developer has ever pushed the ps3, and none have come close to going as far as the exclusive developers imo. but the thing is, that's only because they are lazy, not all, very few developers actually have the will to push themselves, and their games to new height, the one's that reconise the ps3 a nothing moore than a challege and a challege they happily accept.

I actually dream of the day 3rd party developers push out uncharted 2 and killzone 2 quality games as the norm.

When the SEGA Dreamcast the first 6th Gen Console was released back in November 1998 in Japan and September 1999 in the US The PlayStation was able to hold of the Dreamcast from total dominance by the fact that the PlayStation was the dominant player in the 5th Gen for one and SONY had made some good deals with 3rd Party Publishers/Developers over the years and Publishers/Developers new what SONY was doing with the Successor to The PlayStation the the public was also eagerly awaiting the forthcoming PlayStation 2 so Publishers/Developers new they could release Hardcore Games like FFVIII and FFIX and hardcore Gamers would stick with the PlayStation for those Games even if they also got a Dreamcast but if the PS2 had not arrived mid year 2000 some hardcore gamers and Publishers/Developers might have moved to suport the SEGA Dreamcast ahead of the PS2.

With The release of the First of the 7th Gen Consoles the XBOX 360 in November 2005 it was similar situation with the PlayStation 2 having totally dominated the 6th Gen but the first major difference was that the PlayStation 3 more of an unknown quantity at that time and many of the deals that SONY had from the 5th Gen where about to run out. Many Publishers/Developer sore the potential of the of the Hardware of XBOX 360 and decided to make games for the XBOX 360 early on.

SONY Started Developing the PlayStation 3 in 2000 with a big enforces on TECH and being the best gaming platform ever but because of this they did not seem to know where the trends in the gaming industry where going SONY put to mutch time and money on developing the
CELL Broadband engine with its 1 PPU and 8 SPEs sacrificing time and Money for GPU development and SONY also used the Japan only PSX a DVD Recorder built from PS2 Hardware as a basses for the PS3s position in the market the PS3 was more a passe of consumer electronic hardware made for Blu-Ray playback that could play games then a Games machine that could play DVDs like the PS2.

SONY should have developed the PS3 with a powerful Multi-Core CPU and GPU system still using BLU-RAY and WIFI and keeping B/C but without the unnecessary multimedia additions like card reader and touch sensitive buttons to keep it in the same market position as the PS2 a Games Machine that could play BLU-RAY This would keep the launch cost down to about the same as the XBOX 360 giving the 3rd party Publishers/Developers and hardcore gamers more confidence in the PS3 from the start.
