When the SEGA Dreamcast the first 6th Gen Console was released back in November 1998 in Japan and September 1999 in the US The PlayStation was able to hold of the Dreamcast from total dominance by the fact that the PlayStation was the dominant player in the 5th Gen for one and SONY had made some good deals with 3rd Party Publishers/Developers over the years and Publishers/Developers new what SONY was doing with the Successor to The PlayStation the the public was also eagerly awaiting the forthcoming PlayStation 2 so Publishers/Developers new they could release Hardcore Games like FFVIII and FFIX and hardcore Gamers would stick with the PlayStation for those Games even if they also got a Dreamcast but if the PS2 had not arrived mid year 2000 some hardcore gamers and Publishers/Developers might have moved to suport the SEGA Dreamcast ahead of the PS2.
With The release of the First of the 7th Gen Consoles the XBOX 360 in November 2005 it was similar situation with the PlayStation 2 having totally dominated the 6th Gen but the first major difference was that the PlayStation 3 more of an unknown quantity at that time and many of the deals that SONY had from the 5th Gen where about to run out. Many Publishers/Developer sore the potential of the of the Hardware of XBOX 360 and decided to make games for the XBOX 360 early on.
SONY Started Developing the PlayStation 3 in 2000 with a big enforces on TECH and being the best gaming platform ever but because of this they did not seem to know where the trends in the gaming industry where going SONY put to mutch time and money on developing the
CELL Broadband engine with its 1 PPU and 8 SPEs sacrificing time and Money for GPU development and SONY also used the Japan only PSX a DVD Recorder built from PS2 Hardware as a basses for the PS3s position in the market the PS3 was more a passe of consumer electronic hardware made for Blu-Ray playback that could play games then a Games machine that could play DVDs like the PS2.
SONY should have developed the PS3 with a powerful Multi-Core CPU and GPU system still using BLU-RAY and WIFI and keeping B/C but without the unnecessary multimedia additions like card reader and touch sensitive buttons to keep it in the same market position as the PS2 a Games Machine that could play BLU-RAY This would keep the launch cost down to about the same as the XBOX 360 giving the 3rd party Publishers/Developers and hardcore gamers more confidence in the PS3 from the start.
