Forums - Gaming - WRPGs more advanced than JRPGs agree?

Instead of telling characters what to do/open in jrpgs, in wrpgs you ARE the character doing the actions. its basically the same thing, however a wrpg is an upgraded and better rpg...do you agree? the only difference between the two is wrpgs cost more so the games are not as long...discuss

Why create a thread and attempt to stop the discussion with the first post?

I don't think so.

Not another one of these threads! -_-

One Word:

Disagree.

Around the Network

Indeed. Being myself and being badass in a fantasy setting >>>>>>> a forced story with japanese melodrama and crying emo kids.

western RPG is an older genre, a more advanced genre, a more interresting genre, and indeed a more advanced genre (As long as the games are in a fantasy setting. Sci-fi sucks)

(No I'm not a hypocryte. I think sci-fi sucks for RPGs. a Sci-fi RTS is fine.)

IMHO

I LOVE ICELAND!

No, sorry but JRPG's in my opinion are a lot better, I mean sure, in WRPG's you get the freedom to do whatever you like, it's good at first, but then the novelty wears off, and you find out you've done everything with 5-10 hours, and then it's the same thing over and over, boring really.

Y'see, with JRPG's, they seem to be more story driven, whereas WRPG's are all about exploring and doing whatever you like, but that gets boring, atleast in my opinion anyway, since you find out you've done everything, and then can't be arsed playing the game anymore because you know nothing will change, it's one of the reasons I find the GTA games get so dull and boring after the first 3-4 hours or so...

I'm the kind of gamer that loves a great storyline, I play games because of their storyline, gameplay is always a plus, but I like been thrown right into the story, not having to walk around for hours "finding my own story", otherwise the game, to me, has failed, I hate things like that, when a game is making you do what it's supposed to do, for example, in Final Fantasy XIII (Just recently completed it), there's nowhere to go, except follow the story, I like that, following a story, so I KNOW what I'm meant to be doing, whereas on, say... Oblivion, as soon as you leave the sewers, that's it, it gives you too many choices that you forget all about the story, and when you come back to the game after a week or so, you realise you've forgotten what it is you were meant to be doing. If a game can't keep me immersed in it's story, then no thankyou whatsoever, and I find WRPG's to be less about the storyline and more about "Look how much time you can waste doing nothing!", whereas JRPG's are stronger on the story, and deliver it in a better manner, no matter how linear the game may be.

Story > Exploration. (As said, in my opinion)

I'm not sure what you mean. More advanced how? Gameplay-wise? Technically/Visually? Story-telling?

Gameplay-wise they've both made advancements but WRPGs have done a better job of adding more variety of play-styles with different perspectives that cross genres.

Technically Western games this gen in general appear to be technically more advanced than the majority of games from the East regardless of genre. However, in the RPG genre, whilst this is mostly true, Final Fantasy XIII is fairly impressive with very long view distances. Also, most new JRPGs are on the DS so it's probably a bad comparison to make. It seems to me Japanese devs have a tough time with UE3.

Story-telling they've always been different in how they do things. I personally prefer the way they tell the story in WRPGs allowing you to fill in the details of the story around you and giving the illusion of making important choices. To some that may be advanced but a lot of people prefer having the story narrated to them.

Also, WRPGs are shorter than JRPGs? Since when? I think you need to play Baldurs Gate II or Dragon Age... or an Elder Scrolls game that never ends. And why do they cost more?

Disagree.

They are both worthy.

JRPG = Console RPG

WPRG = PC RPG

And that is how it always should have remained. I have never enjoyed a WRPG more on a console that had a PC version as well.

More Advanced how?  In terms of overall theme, JRPGs win by a mile.  WRPGs are much more "realistic" (for lack of a better word) and always seem to me to be much more closely related to humanity than JRPGs.

Anime = JRPG (I love Anime)

SciFi/Fantasy = WRPGs (I love SciFi)

Wait...WRPGs cost more? All games seem to be 50-60$....
